MPG on a 2005 Accord with 60k miles

Buster,
My buddy that has the 04 Accord 2.4L with 168,000 miles STILL gets 33 mpg, and sometimes just a tad more. If I didn't know him and know of his meticulous record keeping, I would have a hard time believing that.
Steve

Buster,

I am averaging 27.4 in my 2005 EX-L 4cyl. 28,500 miles, Penn Plat 5W20. I go about 7-8k miles between oil changes and the car has seen mostly syn or Havoline.

I ran 615 miles one day from Marietta, GA to Meridian, MS and back. Small amount of city driving, 90%+ was Interstate, no traffic, 80 MPH.

I got 32.5 MPG. No air, it was in January.

On a side note, protect those OEM tires on the 7th gen Accords. I had a blow out on this trip and the replacement OEM tire was $230. Yes, I could have had Sam's order one for $50 cheaper, but I was 3 hours from home and didn't want to ride up I-85 on the spare.

Off topic perhaps, but it is interesting how some cars are more speed sensitive than others.

1991 Accord wagon (2.2L, 5sp, 178k mi) I get about 29mpg highway, whether I drive 65 or 77mph or in between. I've measured a good number of trips. Load (solo or 3 passengers + baggage) didn't make a noticeable difference either, and it is somewhat hilly between here and GA or TN where most of my trips are.

1994 Civic sedan (1.5L, 5sp, 222k mi), on the other hand, will get the rated 40mpg on the highway up to about 72mph, but at 77-78 drops to 38mpg. Top gear is actually a wee bit taller in this car than the wagon. The great thing about this car is it gets 32+mpg doing short trips in town, even in the winter.

And I agree with others about Honda's cruise control on these older models -- it is rather poor. I slows down slightly on the downgrades and accelerates too much on upgrades. I only use it in flat areas.

Wind resistance goes up as the square of the speed. Friction and rolling resistance are linear.
If a car seems to hit a plateau, then fuel mileage goes up a lot, it may be in the programming of the ignition timing, valve timing, or fuel map.

Ok, over the last 2 days I put 245 miles on my car and used only 1/2 a tank of gas. I drove no faster than 70 mph and shifted no higher than 3k rpms. That comes out to 38.88 mpg! I do have all tires at 37 lbs and ran 89 octane instead of 87.

The car took 12.7 gallons of gas to fill. I'm sure my numbers are off +/- 3 mpg but even with that, I did get much better gas mileage than when avg'ing 80 mph. The Havoline 5w-20 probably helps a lot also.

Also, once you're used to driving 80 mph on a daily basis for 70 miles a day, it's very hard to go any slower. Hard to go back. Like watching HDTV then going back to regular.

guess it depends on your priorities - do you need to get there in a BFH, or would you rather get better MPG?

I'm a reformed 'me first' driver - and yes, it is very hard to do (I have a ~72 mile round trip commute to work).

I say try 60-65MPH for a month, maybe two. Keep a log of how long it takes you to get to work/home compared to what you're currently doing.

I'd be interested to see the results of that little test. My commute is a whopping 5 miles, else I would test it myself.

Wow! That's awesome! Who needs a Civic nowadays??

I have a 2.4L engine, too, but mine only gets 26mpg on the highway(4 spd auto)

Oh well, I love my car anyways...

Buster, I don't remember if you have the V6 or the I4. I often get around 240-250 miles when the gauge reads 1/2 full, but I don't get anywhere near another 240-250 miles on the second half. Was just curious how you calculated that 38.88 mpg? I'm consistently getting 27-28 mpg on fairly conservative driving. But I don't calculate the mpg until I've actually filled it up and calculated the gallons and miles traveled.

I was just curious, that's all.

I am definitely in the minority here. i drive an 04 WRX STi, and i only get around 20 mpg. haha. but then, i have qutie a bit of fun driving, and go WOT as well as hit redline on a regular basis. hard not to in this car. heh.

LOU, excellent point. I thought of that last night. I just cut the 12.6 gallons in 1/2. I have the I4. I'm going to see how many I get over the entire tank. I do not think the 38 mpg is entirely accurate fwiw. It will be interesting to see what I get in total. I can then make a better calculation.

Yeah, I'm not sure why these fuel gauges are like that, but it seems that every car I've ever had runs much further on the top half than the bottom half. To me, the 1/2 mark should be more like 1/3, or 2/5.

Yep, mine is like that, too. From the full mark to 3/4 mark, I usually get 105 miles out of it, but I only get around 320 from the whole tank...

Maybe manufacturers do this on purpose to make people think they're getting better mileage than they really are?? Who knows?

I only get about 27mpg with my Integra going on an average of 45-70mph every day (30 mile round trip). -sighs- Should be a lot better than that. Probably has a lot to do with the fact that there's a few stop signs and traffic lights on the way.

I know it SEEMS like this, but, I wonder if it is something else. Notice how your guage goes above Full? It also goes that same distance below Empty before you're really Empty(don't blame me if yours doesn't do this). It seems to me that there are only THREE places my fuel guage is accurate: Above Full, Dead center Medium, and Below Empty. Everything else seems off because of this, so, when at 3/4 full, I really have less than 3/4 of a tank. When at 1/4, I really have more than 1/4 of a tank.
Just my observation....

Yes, I've thought of that, too. But I can go about 250 miles to the halfway mark, and the furthest I've gone on a full tank is barely over 400 miles, usually around 375 miles. And 400 miles is really pushing it well beyond the E mark, more than I'm comfortable with. Maybe if I ran it to empty...

Ok, final calculation of gas mileage came to 34.89 mpg. LouDawg was right. So cutting my speed down 10mph gave me about 2 mpg. I'll be sticking to my 80 mph. 2 mpg isn't worth it IMO.
