Two-stroke stuff started great too,

I run a splash of stabil and some two cycle oil in the fuel even in 4-stroke gear.

I run some tcw-3 in my 4-stroke ope fuel. 1.5oz in 5 gallons. Especially before putting it up for winter. Seems to keep the floats/needle seats from sticking.

LOL I never pick up sticks, etc before I mow. I have to sharpen 3 or 4 times each summer, and then buy a new blade for the next year.

This. Always chunks missing from the blade. Usually use original manufacturer replacement blades, but bought some copperheads this year. They're thicker and appear stronger. Time will tell.

what causes?

1) They had a bad batch of spark plugs a few years ago. Put a new CHAMPION spark plug in.
2 Your coil could be going out. You can gap your plug down to 0.020 from 0.030 to get a little more life out of your coil and better hot starts.
3) Briggs auto choke? Sometimes they need adjusted. I hate them and prefer the old bulb or real sliding choke lever.

Disagree, I still use over one year old gas treated with Stabil. I always add it at the pump. Never had a problem when I used it.

Glad to hear your mower started on the first pull. My Honda with GCV-160 always used to, but not this year. It refused to start after more than five pulls, so I gave it a shot of starting fluid. Then it started on the first pull. That was more than three weeks ago when it was still pretty cold outside. While I had it out of the shed I replaced the original NGK BPR5ES plug with a NGK BPR5EIX Iridium plug, restarted, then put the mower away.

A week later I returned and tried to start it again. Still no joy after more than five pulls, so I hit it again with the starting fluid. This time there was a little cutting to do, so I cut until all of last season's fuel was gone and then put it away.

The following week I added fresh fuel, gave the rope a tug, and presto! She starts again on the first pull. The moral of this story is that stale gas matters. While I do try to add Stabil towards the end of the season for all of my OPE gas, sometimes I forget.

Typo. Replaced the original NGK BPR5ES with a NGK BPR6EIX Iridium. I purchased the replacement plug based upon the manual and not what was actually installed. Will keep an eye on the new cooler plug and change it if the mower starts to misbehave.

My Honda started on first pull again today; amazing what fresh fuel, warm weather and a new spark plug can do. So far no sign of any issue with respect to the change in heat range on the plug. This isn't surprising considering the manual says I actually have the right heat range in there. Perhaps I'll pull it later in the season to compare it with the one that came out.

My John Deere 14SB always starts on the first or second pull. Put a new NGK BPR5ES plug in it last Tuesday, and after four pulls it still wouldn't start. Oh yeah, some idiot forgot to open the fuel shutoff valve! After mowing, I shut it off, hose off the mower, then start it back up to empty the fuel from the carb. Mowed again Saturday, she fired up on the first pull again.

L8R,
Matt

my 10 year old Cub Cadet with the Powermore took maybe 6 pulls. I used it very sparingly last year so it had old gas with stabil. I think I parked it in September.
