Mower oil recommendations

J.D. D130 : 22 H.P. B&S Twin-Cylinder . Always use 5w-30 full synthetic . Mostly PENNZOIL Platinum . Others are SHELL Rotella Gas-Truck ( red bottle ) and last 2 have been PENNZOIL Ultra Platinum 5w-30 . Change every season in late October or early November then place in storage until spring . Close to 650 Hours since new . Always use non Top Tier 90 w/o E.

The 90 non E was Top Tier . Been many years since the drop of T.T..

Rotella or equivalent 15W-40 is what I would use. I've used a lot of different (cheaper) oils in my small engines and if I really want to use the good stuff I'll splurge on Briggs 30.

I have the same motor in my Bob-Cat, CRZ48. Just got filters for the hydro gear and engine. The Hydro gears call for 20w50. I just got some Mobil 1 15w50....same difference really.

I reckon just just the same stuff in the gears and engine.

What’s wrong with K-Tech? I have been using K-Tech 10W-30 in my Honda mower for years. I get it at a yard equipment shop.

I vote Super Tech Full Syn 15w40 HDEO. I feel like you'd be better off running a cheap oil and changing more often in those temperatures. I am keeping my grandparents fleet of MTD made mowers alive on it and Supertech filters. She mows around 5-7 acres a week with residential mowers.

Briggs engeins are not to picky, there number 1 requrirment is having enough oil. Keep it full, change it once a year with somthing brown and slippery then enjoy using your Briggs.

Have the same 24 hp Kawasaki V-twin in my Ariens (aka Gravely) zero turn. I use 5W-40 Delo synthetic diesel oil in it. With a larger PH3600, or equivalent other brand, filter. Change it each end of mowing season before winter, typically about 60-70 hours in a season. Mow 2 acres with it. Bought a bunch of the Delo on Advance Auto clearance in late 2024 so that's the current 5W-40 synthetic in use.

I also have an old Cub Cadet riding mower with the Vanguard B&S V-twin, I think it's 18 hp from memory. I use the same Delo 5W-40 and 3600-type filter on it. It gets a lot less use as mostly just used for pulling things behind, not mowing. So I don't change it out until a few years use.

Truthfully, any 30 or 40 weight oil is probably fine. But being air cooled I like the 40 weight. Also air cooled tend to have bigger clearances and more blow-by contamination, so the diesel oil seems a good fit since they are intended for diesels with more blow-by.

About that time to put in fresh oil for the season. I have a zero turn with a Kawasaki FS651V that I currently run KTech 10w-40 until my warranty is up. I inherited an older John Deere GX85 with a B&S. It has sat for many years. I am going to freshen it up to use and was curious what people thought would be a good oil to run. B&S states a synthetic 5w-30 is best (https://www.briggsandstratton.com/en-us/support/faqs/mower-oil-type-and-capacity). I was thinking a 10w-30 synthetic would be better in my area due to the high temps. I run mowers in the spring, summer, and fall. The ambient temp range during those seasons is from 40s to 115 heat index. I was looking at amsoil 4 cycle oil for the John Deere and will possibly put the zero turn on that once the warranty ends. Thoughts on just running AMSOIL Signature Series 5w30? Mobil 1? I don't mind having separate oils for different applications but also won't turn down being able to use same oils across different applications to save myself some money.

Whatever leftover oil I have laying around. I change it annually. The engine sounds great. When my neighbors struggle with sick sounding mowers, mine proudly sounds like a turbine engine

Nothing special by any means.. Once a year I visit my Ace Hardware to use my $5.00 birthday coupon and put it towards two quarts of their house branded SAE 30.

If you haven't picked a motor oil for the B&S yet, I would recommend Mobil 1 0W-40 FS Euro. That is what I use in my B&S engine, and it runs quieter than it does on the 30HD that B&S recommends. The viscosity will be good for your climate. Not only is it a very good oil, but I see you use it in your BMW cars, so you will already have it on the shelf.

Might try 10w-40 next season for the B&S JD and swap back to for the KW zero turn. Might not.

I honestly had no idea. Thank you for letting me know. I will run them at a higher throttle moving forward. I may just bump them to 100% in that case.

Always run air cooled engines max throttle when mowing. Napa 15w50 syn is on sale, on a regular basis, less than $6 a quart.
I usually run Kawasaki syn 15w50 in my kubota. My buddy has a exmark w/FX 805, over 3000 hours on it, nothing but Kawa 15w50, every 50-100 hours.
