As you might have seen in the last few weeks, was debating to buy a truck

Now again have to haul some furniture within 12 miles radius.

Question is, what's cheapest way to rent a truck?

U-Haul seems pricey because of mileage charges.

Lowe's or Home Depot or any other better suggestions? Thanks

I bought a house 15 miles away from my apartment. I have a lot of little stuff that I'm trying to move before I move my "big" stuff. I have been tossing it in the back of the Jeep and then running it over to the house after work. Jeep is now out of commission for a bit.

Renting a truck is crazy expensive. I was looking at close to $100 with insurance for the round trip (and insurance is something you want to get with the heaps that are UHaul trucks). Even Penske is expensive.

I'm going to be using a 5x8 enclosed trailer behind my Ford Focus to make a few trips. That should take care of most of it. Nothing is particularly heavy in my case just big. So even if I make 2 or 3 trips I'll still be cheaper than the truck rental option.

I rented a van to move a few years back. Rented an Econoline sized van but they didn't have any so they "upgraded" me to a box van econoline. It got 4MPG. $.5 / mile and getting 4MPG didn't make that a cheap 20 miles to drive back when gas was $4 a gallon! Plus rental fees and insurance.

Do you have any friends that would lend you a pickup or a trailer?

Agreed, U-Haul is ridiculously expensive. Plus, sometimes their trucks are beat up too.

I don't have any friends with truck, majority have cars or min-vans-

So far Lowes seems to be cheapest and then HD. Let me check on CL to see if I can find someone.

Check out Enterprise.

We had to get our oldest daughter from college last June. It was cheaper to get a van from Enterprise Truck and drive it from St Louis to Galesburg, IL and back than it was to get a one-way UHaul.

I think we ended up with an E250.

What made it work for us was unlimited mileage. I think it was like $75/day, but we had it for two days.

Even with gas, it was cheaper than a one-way UHaul.

But if you are looking at just a couple of hours, then maybe using the Lowes/Home Depot truck is the way to go.

UHaul seems to charge more if you are dropping off at a different location. The enclosed trailer doubled in price when I tried to drop it off at a different place.

I dont know much about renting trucks but what I did was got a beater truck. She aint much but its nice not to bother with renting or borrowing a truck when I do need one. I paid $1,500 for it and I have put that into twice over but hey thats why I own tools.

I had a U-Haul Ford leave be broken down on I-80 outside of North Platte,NE because the vacuum pump bracket broke and let the belt get tangled with another belt. Made a [censored] of a racket. Took U-Haul three days to find a new bracket and get truck running again. All their equipment gets minimal maintenance and yes, their

equipment is sorry at best.

Back when I owned my own Business, I occasionally needed to rent a truck. I found the best deal (and trucks) at Ryder.

Sounds like I would either rent a truck from HD or Lowes, Uhaul is going to be pain. Will check Ryder too. Thanks

Last time I moved, (20 years ago), I rented from Penske. I got a large van. Hired 2 strong guys and moved a whole 4 bedroom house in 12 hours. Don't remember the cost, but was reasonable.

I think home depot is under $20 for 75 minutes of truck time. I could rent it 4 times before paying for one year of registration on an owned truck. However, i am the type that will always own a truck.
