I am planning to install a by pass oil filter in the engine bay of my 2003 Toyota Echo; but, I can not find any space to fit one. How difficult is it to relocate the battery from the engine bay to the trunk in order to make room for a by pass oil filter? Thanks.

It wouldn't be difficult. Just run a heavy gauge cable (maybe 2 guage welding cable? - check the amps and associated voltage drops) through the firewall and under the panels, as you would a car stereo. Ground the battery to the frame, and secure the battery in position.
Are you sure you can't find anywhere under the hood? Get a couple buddies to have a look too. It's easy to miss obvious locations sometimes!

Thanks for the advice. There is a possible location which is between the front grill and the radiator; but, I will have to remove the entire front bumper cover in order to install it. The front grill narrows the top opening that I can not even pass a roll of toilet paper thru the opening without squeezing it.

I'd also probably put the battery in a plastic container (like they use for marine and RV batteries) if you relocate it. If the battery ever leaks this will save your trunk.

Be warned, that you are going to move 40 pounds of weight from the front to the rear, which is going to affect the poor weather handling of your car (FWD). The practice is common on race cars, to put more weight over the rear axles, for better traction on the launch (RWD).

I would be a little worried about the hydrogen generated by the battery when it charges. Does that trunk have enough ventilation?

If you go to Summit Racing or Jeg's they will have kits to relocate the battery.

I would not knowif the trunk has any ventilation. How can you tell? I remember the old VW Beetle had its battery under the rear seat. I probably inhaled a lot of hydrogen without knowing it.

Any other safer place in the car that a batter can be relocated?
