Motul "hybrid" 0w-16

Does the manual say anything about using 0w20? That would be easier to find. Many of the big names like Mobil and Valvoline are making it but I haven’t seen it yet on the shelf.

Advance Auto Parts has their house brand Carquest synthetic in 0w16. Right now, they have the 5 quarts plus filter for $26.99, but the included filter is a Tearolator which is not a good filter. So you'd have to make another stop to get a real filter at another store.

Napa has Valvoline 0w16 on sale this month for $5.49/qt (or $26.99 for the big 5qt jug). Pick up a Napa Gold or Platinum while you're there.

Also, you can use 0w20 or even 5w30

Yes, yes it does.

Recommended Engine Oil

Premium-grade 0W-16, 0W-20 detergent oil with an API Certification Seal on the container.

The owner's manual also has an ambient temperature chart where both 0W-16 and 0W-20 are shown for all temperatures.

* You may also use synthetic motor oil if it is labeled with the API Certification Seal and is the specified viscosity grade.

Currently the best product in the market is the ExxonMobil-made TGMO 0W-16 -- Toyota part number: 00279-16QTE-01.

It's a guaranteed fully GTL formulation (according to the MSDS). The only thing that will be better is Mobil 1 0W-16, which is mostly PAO-based but not yet available.

Go with the 0W-16 if that's what's recommended. It's basically 0W-20 with less VII. Also, I wouldn't get anything other than the TGMO or Mobil 1 because I wouldn't go with anything other than GTL or PAO to ensure high oil-film strength with a 0W-16. They both are SN-PLUS-ready (have Ca/Mg detergent) as well, as the intended Toyota Camry engines are GDI.

It sells for under $5 at Toyota dealers:

Owners manual says we can use 0w20 in a pinch but to replace it with 0w16 asap

I know its like splitting hairs. But I rather stick with the grade it came with and is recommend.

I thought about the toyota oil since that seems pretty available.

Filter wise Im probably going to use a FUG for the every other interval the car recommends. Technically im suppose to run the factory filter for another OCI but I want to cut it open and see whats inside from break in.

Maybe your manual is different than the one I'm seeing? Page 501: http://techinfo.honda.com/rjanisis/pubs/OM/AH/AT5A1818OM/enu/AT5A1818OM.PDF

Regardless, if you want to stick with 0W-16 then go with 0W-16.

Maybe I am wrong. It was about a month ago when I was flipping thru the book. I thought for sure it was heavy on using 0w16.

The car gets short tripped often so the oil does not get up to temperature and for not long. It might be best to stick with the 0w16 in our particular case. Thanks for the link. I like having that saved to my phone now for future reference!

Well it will warm up faster if it is thicker.
