Motul 8100 0W30 X-Lite. API SL

Sorry in advance if this has been covered already. Found a post from 2007. Anyway, I have a 2013 Subaru Outback 6cyl. A Motul dealer recommended the 0W30 X-Lite since it has an ester base. My manual says to use API SM. Will an SL oil hurt anything like the catalytic convertor? Motul site says X-Clean 5W30 which is SM, but right now I have the SL in there. Just had spine surgery so I apologize if this post is in the wrong place. (Lots of meds!) Thanks.

it will be fine. as long as its not burning a lot of oil it will not hurt the converter. there is nothing wrong with SL rated oils, they just do not meet as stringent of standards as SM or SN oils do.

Motul makes some very good oils. Expensive though!

I wouldn't run the SL because the car is under warranty. You don't want to start getting into that argument with Subaru if something totally unrelated happens (as they could try to pin it on the "wrong oil" being used).

Thanks guys for the quick replies. My next oil change I‘ll use the API SM until the warranty is up. It isn't burning oil, but only has 2800 miles on it. Motul is expensive, but I like the fact they make their own base oils. (Supposedly) Thanks again.

I don't believe they make their own basestock. They're likely buying it from someone else. Same for the additives (likely coming from Lubrizol).

That may be true. I read online regarding their history that at least their ester base stock they make themselves using coconuts, vegetables, and animal fats. All made in France. I like it so far. Looking forward to doing a used oil analysis at 7500 miles. (as per manual)
