Yeah. The Taurus was a big step forward. It was viewed that way at the time and the years have borne that out. Still a very handsome car.

The price though! 28K was really big money. The wagon alone would be $35 k and that would not be heavily discounted.

l enjoyed the black sedan cop cars in Robocop!

When I was a young buck (lol) I rented a Taurus around that time.
I did Md. to Miami back straight in one trip- crazy then....
I ran I95 at 90mph all the way down.
Gas mpg was awesome and the ride great for the era.
When I returned it the private rental place revised it's unlimited mile rental agreement
They were not happy...........

I'll bet. I used to work for a car finance company back in the late '90's and was in charge of repossessions. The number of these that we picked up with bad transmissions was staggering. My co-worker and neighbor each had one... both ended up with bad transmissions.

IMO that spoilers plus package looks tacky and otherwise ruined the good looks of that Taurus.

Fortunately I get to revisit that Taurus every year around this time by watching National Lampoons Christmas Vacation.....as a matter of fact I may watch that today.

My parents had a 1990 sedan when I was a kid. It was a great car in the 6 years or so that we had it. Got wrote off in an accident at around 140k miles probably just before the transmission would have failed.

Only real issue was it didn't like to start below minus 20c without being the block heater. Even while being boosted by our 79 Impala wagon that did start. Other than that one alternator and one blower motor was all that failed.

"0-60 in a respectable 9.8 seconds." 1989. 31 years later and we can have a sport wagon doing 3.4 second 0-60 in the RS 6 Avant. Sure, it costs about double the inflation adjusted price of this Taurus Aero GT.

I'm getting old fellows and I just had a flashback Terry our pastor in Carson City bought a new 86 with a five speed manual. This was back when the double nickel speed limit was in fact even in Nevada. Death toll went through the roof from people falling asleep at the slow speed.
Terry bought a radar detector and was cruising through the desert to Las Vegas. He wasn't aware that radar detectors are not good for high speeds when you're on the open road especially with a budget one.
he was pulled over doing over 100. Detector did not go off until the NHP officer was talking to him through the window and then it went crazy.
Officer found out he was a pastor and told him he of all people shouldn't be doing that.He was let Off!! We knew because his wife ratted him out.
