MotorGuard M100 oil filter change

Hi 310, are you using the whole roll of Kirkland? I did a experimental test fit with a roll at a little over 4 1/4 diameter, it seemed to work and didn't pinch the gasket, I used some heat resistant shrink tube on the filters 1.5" core. The Kirkland roll I used was the old 425 sheet, have you used the newer 380 sheet rolls? Are the new rolls a bit firmer?
I did the Kirkland paper experiment a few months ago, correction! Tried a roll at about 4 1/8" in diameter and it did not pinch, when I tried a roll at 4 1/4" it did pinch.

Very neat! What bypass orifice size do you use?
I started using the Motor Guard about 1965 or 66. The standard size. Orifice since the 1920s is 1/16 inch. I like to use Great Value 1000 from Walmart. Scott 1000 is good but it is larger and more needs to to be removed. Dont force a oversized roll. Push the roll down against the bottom.

What is the best toilet paper for filtering?
I normally use Great Value 1000 from Walmart. Its a little smaller. I just bought a 6 pack of Viva Signture cloth paper towels. My flat head Ford V8 canister filter takes a 4 1/2 diameter by 5 1/2 inch tall element. Have to cut a 11 inch roll in half. Origionally set it up for Scott 1000.

I just bought a 6 pack of VIVA Signature cloth paper towels at Walmart. Cut off a 4 1/2 inch element. Unrolled it to 4 1/4 inch diameter. Beutiful element. I used a sharp knife. Might be better to use a fine tooth hack saw and blow of the loose stuff. Its hard to cut with a knife especially the core. I dont think the 4 1/4 VIVA will pinch in the Motor Guard. The soft paper works good. I always used the whole roll. Pinched like heck in the Motor Guard. In the 60s I would keep pushing it in with a knife blade.

It has half a roll of VIVA signature cloth paper towels in it now. Its on my diesel tractor. I did a fleet of mostly Ford Powerstrokes about 20 years ago. They got Gulf Coast filters bolted to the frame. Used Bounty big roll paper towels. They recently said they needed more filters. Cant crawl under trucks anymore.

I've posted the install on this M100 on my 2000 Ford Excursion a couple of years ago and thought I would do a follow up on this system. I've got 28,000 miles on the M100 now and have settled into changing the filter every three months, about 3500 miles. I'm not changing the oil, just changing the roll and topping up the oil by 1.25 liters and the full flow get changed every 15,000 miles. The V10 is running excellent, no blowby, no leaks and burns around a liter every 6000-8000 miles. Most of the miles are mixed town and highway with some towing as well. I'm running non synthetic oil in it and usually buy what's on sale. Compared to my 6.4 Powerstroke this engine has been a dream and not one issue since I put it back on the road.

I have a couple of these old Motor Guards that filter from the bottom up. I normally use Great Value 1000 from Walmart. Its a little shorter. All you need to worry about is the seal at the top around the core. I make a spacer about 2 inch diameter to push up on the core as you tighten the tee handle. I have 2 inch aluminum and a lathe. You can use anything that can take hot motor oil.

The Motor Guard factory elements are 4 1/4 inch diameter. The reason I use the Great value 1000 from Walmart instead of the Scott 1000 is it is smaller. Dont need to untoll as much. The toilet paper converted flat head Ford V8 canister filter takes 4 1/2 inch Scott 1000. Motor Guards were a pain in the old days. All we had was soft 2ply and I always used the whole roll. Single ply was loose wound.

Watch out for Motor Guards with San Jose California printed on top. Some had screens on top that might be missing. The screen keeps the paper from pushing against the orifice shutting off the oil. Some are designed to seal inside 1 1/2 inch core toilet paper. You have to be inventive to use them.

If the roll is 4 1/4 inch and it pinches its the wrong paper. The 1000 sheet wont pinch at 4 1/4. The Motor Guard elements are 4 1/4 diameter and 4 1/2 inches tall. The last sheet is taped. The white ones are similar to Scott 1000. For the shorter paper on the old Motor Guards that filtered from the botton up I use a 2 inch spacer at the bottom to push up on the core when you tighten the tee handle. On the newer ones that filter from the top down I put the orifice at the inlet. Push the paper down hard against the bottom and put on the top. The seal inside the core isnt needed. Most modern toilet paper filters dont have a center tube. They depend on the seal around the core. The Australian Jackmaster Classic for example.

Thanks Ralph for the info about the spacer, but I keep finding 4 1/2 inch paper. 😊

Thats part of the fun finding the right paper. I get some looks at Walmart. A creepy old man squeezing toilet paper.
When I was in the store squeezing the Frank rolls and comparing it to Camco rolls there was a young fellow that was in the same isle with a rusty muffler on the floor, he was sorting through the exhaust adapters to find one to repair the inlet that rusted off, what a weird aisle that would seem to be if anyone came by....lol.

I read the Costco reviews on the 380 sheet, not many like the change, poor reviews, a few said the paper doesn't absorb water and resists degrading, plugs the sewer lines and you have to call the plumber, lol, but maybe it would make a good filter media then! I bought 50mm 2:1 high heat shrink tube online, it doesn't have the adhesive that you used.
When I was doing diesels I recommended Bounty big roll paper towels. Some said they use kirkland. Im wondering what is a Kirkland. The big filters used two rolls of paper towels. A very small orifice at the top sent oil down thru 22 inches of media. They claim 99 percent at under 1 micron.

I measured 2 Motor Guard factory elements today. They were 4 3/16 inch. They just dropped into the Motor Guard housing. They must depend on them making contact with the shoulder at the bottom. I would add a few rounds.

One thought. If the filter is removing wear metals that are normally counted in a UOA, how do you know the actual wear numbers? For instance, what if you were actually getting worse wear, but didn't realize it because the metals were being filtered out?

Also, where on earth do you find toilet paper that fits? I have some MG filters laying around and I only found some RV paper that barely fits. Scott is recommended all the time, but it isn't a long enough roll.
You might put something in the bottom to push up on the core with the old ones that filter from the bottom up. All you need to worry about is making good contact with the core seal. The newer Motor Guards push the paper down hard against the bottom. Put the orifice at the inlet.

The reason the big Gulf Coast filters work so well is they use a very small orifice at the inlet. I tried using a cut down roll of Viva towels with no orifice with a sandwich adapter. Had to make a choice. Put a orifice at the inlet or go back to 1000 sheet. I did both. The Viva is doing fine in the Ford canister filter but it is a different design. The 10 quart Gulf Coast filter uses 2 rolls of big roll paper towels.

I normally take a few fraps off and it's about 4 1/4" as well. I also used heat shrink tube as well, but over time it came off so I made some aluminum sleeves and they work well. To stop the rolls from pinching I wrap the middle of the roll with packing tape. I never noticed the change in the roll from 425 to 380, so very similar. I haven't been driving this vehicle now for several years, so don't use this filter. I do however run the M100 on my daily transmission and change the roll every 10,000 miles and a Frantz every 3000 miles for the engine.
I was talking about my 84 Subaru without an oil drain in over 250.000 miles using a Frantz oil cleaner. It had the Frantz adapter that eliminated the full flow filter. Used Mobil 1. A Caterpillar lab manager saw my posts and sent me a sample kit. He said the oil looks good for that many miles. He suggested I change the Frantz every 6.000 miles instead of every 12.000 miles. I was going about 12.000 miles a year and changing the Frantz about every 4 July. Been doing 6.000 miles since. Mostly highway in the Dallas Texas area.

Good video, now I see how you fit those oversize rolls, I don't think you will see anything on your magnet being its on the return side, but it must be an experiment to see if it is possible for anything to pass through four and a half inches of Costco's finest oil bypass media. :)
About 1985 I was set up at the Denton Texas flea market demonstrating the Frantz oil cleaner. I was getting the normal fools explaining how the toilet paper cloggs up the oil system. A nice 53 Chevy pulled into the parking lot. The elderly couple told me they bought the car new and put a Frantz in it. The 53 Frantz was a Frantz canister that went inside the larger AC canister. A 18 wheeler pulled off the highway. He said come and look at mine. He had 2 Frantz 3 stackers bolted to the firewall. Said he gets a 6 pack of Safeway Truly fine toilet paper to service them. Detroit 2 cycle. Didnt sell any Frantzs but it was an interesting day. One guy told me so much toilet paper was getting in the oil Frantzs have been outlawed in Texas. It never ends.
