Motorcraft syn blend F 150

I had two New Ford F 150's an 05 and a 07. I changed the oil every 4 to 5 thousand miles. The trucks basicly had a normal life with the occasional heavy loads here and there. At 60,000 miles they both smoked (blue)on start up. I used Motorcraft 5w20 with Fram tough guard filters. What would cause them to smoke with such low miles?

probably valve stem seals.

Smoking at start up is usually valve stem seals. Unless they use more than a quart between changes I wouldn't worry about it.

Is it normal for that to happen at that mileage? How could that be prevented in the future?

Switch to a high mileage oil. Do a couple of oil changes with it... allowing a bit of time / miles to do it's work. You might be pleased by the results. I would suggest using the 5w30 and Motorcraft filter. Just my preference.

Curious as to why you didn't use Motorcraft filters instead of the Garbage Guard....?

Neither of our 5.4L's burn ANY oil, this is not common. Were you using any oil additives or anything?

My wifes 06 4.6 with 59k and my 05 with 41k both have run nothing but 5w20's and have never consumed oil. The Ford fleet at work never uses enough oil to require top offs in an OCI. IWhat is the OP doing different ?

I guess the marketing for Fram oil filters is pretty good. I thought I was buying the best filter with there 99% multi pass efficency. Until I found this board and found out the truth about them. On my New Dodge I am running mobil 1 and Napa gold filters. I never used any oil additives on my Ford's and the truck's was bone stock. If I had to make an assumption I would think it had to be the oil filter not filtering properly. My oil changes never passed 5000 and I have been using that oil and filter combo from start.

It is probably the oil pressure taking a while to come up. Try a Motorcraft filter for a while and see if that helps.
