The original Motorcraft battery in my Explorer (3 years old) has the little "eye" hydrometer in it. While I realize that only monitors the condition of one cell, it had been green for years, then showed yellow about a month ago, and now is showing orange. Is it time to put in a new battery, or is orange condition better than yellow? I suspect the winter cold may have something to do with it, but that would be a first for me. I do have a new battery sitting right in my garage ready to be installed.

On Star Trek, it goes from green to yellow, then orange, then red. So I expect Motorcraft battery condition to do the same. Can you add some distilled water to see what happens? My current battery electrolyte level was only about a quarter inch above the plates when I checked it. My previous Delco went bad with the eye still showing green, for whatever that's worth.
I think the battery is fixing to crap out on you. Like Tosh said, on Star Trek and traffic lights and everything I have ever dealt with that change colors, it goes from green to yellow to orange to red and red means not good.

Well yes, peace of mind especially with a nor'easter forecast for this weekend. And I threw the old battery on my float charger and will maintain it just to start up vehicles I buy at auctions...
Try blasting your old battery with de-sufatation mode for several days.
