Motorcraft application guide

There are non-Ford applications for Motorcraft filters, however their online catalog at http://www.motorcraft.com doesn't list them...at least not directly.

You can, however, cross-reference a Fram filter to a Motorcraft filter using their on-line catalog, and then view the list of vehicles that the Motorcraft filter number fits. That will show non-Ford applications.

The Fram filter for your 1999 Maxima is a PH7317 and that crosses to two Motorcraft numbers, FL-821 and FL-822.

However, the 99 Maxima is only listed as being a vehicle that the FL-821 fits. The FL-822 doesn't list the 99 Maxima.

As to where to get the FL-821, Advance Auto apparently has it in stock at their local stores. Rockauto.com also has it. It fits several years of the Ford Probe, which probably the only reason Advance has it.

If you cross reference back on the Wix site, you'll find:

FL-821 = Wix 51357

Wix Part Number: 51357

FL-822, FL-2007 = Wix 51356

Wix Part Number: 51356
Principal Application: Acura (02-05), Chrysler Imports (92-05), Ford Probe (93-97), Honda (01-05), Infiniti/Nissan (96-05), Mazda (71-00), Mercury Villager (99-00), Mitsubishi (90-05), Saturn (04-05)

Looks like the Wix 51356 and MC FL-822, FL-2007 are for newer applications. And if Filter_Guy has any credibility whatsoever, there may be better media in the newer models. Other than that, the specs look almost identical.

Call or email Wix and ask them what are the differences between the 51356 and 51357. You may also want to go to the parts store, compare the models in the particular brand, see if there's any physical differences.

I used the interchange guide (http://www.motorcraft.com) and the part number for applicable Wix. For the Wix part# 51357 you get several choices, then look at the fitment for the choices returned which resulted in:

Part No.: FL-821
Manufacturer: MOTORCRAFT
Part Type: FILTER, OIL
Total No. of Vehicles: 209

2012 Toyota Camry I4. I looked at the Fram site for oil filters and came up with the following codes XG9972, TG9972 and CH9972. Plugged them into the motorcraft interchange and nothing came up. Can anyone double check? Thanks!

Those are cartridge filter and I doubt Motorcraft will have a applicable cross reference.

RockAuto carries a large selection of Motorcraft oil filters and you can usually look up the Motorcraft application for your vehicle without buying one.

Thanks alot guys. That is helpful. My neighbor has an 08 Saturn Astra 1.8 I4. He says his oil is black by 5k when going to the local chevy dealer. Do you think MC makes an oil filter for that application? I'll check rockauto. He normally keeps cars for around 10 yrs so I'm thinking a switch to MC oil and filter would be a nice upgrade. I know walmart has a MC application guide so I can check there also.

If I bring in a Toyo oil filter cartridge to the Ford dealer is it easy enough for them to change out? That way I can get the MC oil in there. $20 oil change plus filter at ford dealer versus $85 for a full syn oc at the toyo dealer. I thought I read somewhere that the camry needs to have a splash shield removed when doing the oil change. If thats the case then the ford dealer prob won't want to mess with it.

Probably need to call and ask them their policy on bring in outside parts. Some places frown on it unless it is a filter they normally do not stock and saves them the parts runner the trouble of getting the filter since you already have it.

That being said, I would just take it Toyota dealership and have them do it all. MC oil is good oil but it is nothing special that can not be fulfilled by whatever the Toyota dealer is using.

You are really bringing a lot of variables into an oil change scenario that is should not normally be there unless you just do it yourself at home and use the filter and oil you want.

Resurrecting this old thread because I'm curious what the little "trick" is, and the link is dead. What is the trick to enable use of FL-400S in an FL-822 application?
