I guess the formula must have changed..more then a yr ago with 5100mi on the MC 5/20 oil,4 qt pan,2.5L OB.. blackstones report..zinc 711, Phos 570, Boron 103..I to was wondering if the boron at 700+ is also a typo

I would have rather seen more magnesium that boron, but I guess that is up to the formulator. They should know their additive package/base stock best.

I don't know what to think. All the other numbers, except for boron, look typical for Motorcraft 5w20. I had the lab (Holt-Cat) run this voa because the used oil analysis on the Ford bulk MC 5w20 also showed high boron (600 ppm). Maybe someone will eventually post another voa/used oil analysis for this oil from another lab for comparison.

Whatever is in it, it has proven to be a very good oil. If I were not going to use either the Mobil 1 product I'm using or the Pennzoil Platinum, I would have no problems using the Motorcraft 5W-20 blend.

..to bad that this bulk oil can't be verified as to be the same stuff that pours out of the red bottles..I have my doubts..I say this because my daughters lincoln always had the oil changed at the dealer..after several yrs the car started to consume oil (1qt per change)..being curious, I changed out the oil useing the MC 5/20 purchased from Walmart..the driving habits have not changed, but now, no top-ups are needed... I have done several oil changes since then..I found out later from the parts guy that the oil they used "meets" the ford spec (min), but is not like the same stuff in the red bottle..same thinking for the antifreeze they were useing

Something I may not have mentioned with my used oil analysis post. My truck ran real bad on the dealer bulk. I had quite a bit of piston slap and what sounded like a lifter tick upon acceleration. The engine ran rough and the oil looked dark very quick compared to Motorcraft out of the bottle. This is what compelled me to get the uoa. After the oil change with Motorcraft out of the bottle, the truck now runs smooth, engine is responsive, significantly better fuel mileage (30% better, I thought it was winter blend giving bad fuel mileage), and the piston slap and lifter tick is gone. I really thought piston slap couldn't be cured by motor oil, but it didn't exist until after the dealer oil change. I really think they put diesel oil in my truck.

Dad had a '95 F-150 that had some piston slap to it. Before he took it in to trade it in...he threw some 20-50 in it...couldn't hear it anymore. He pulled the snot out of that 5L.

Not me, as boron is being used as an anti-wear agent/friction modifier these days.

I would wonder if even though its a FORD dealer they use Motorcraft oil. I dont know anyone that works for a Ford garage. But my one friend works for a GM garage and he told me they use Bulk Pennzoil 10w30. Simply because there is a Pennzoil terminal nearby that sells them the oil, not GM goodwrench oil. I know another friend that works a Dodge garage and he told me they use Bulk 10w30 Carquest oil by the drums, which he says is Valvoline. Which we know is Valvoline with a weaker ad pack. Dealers I am sure are trying to make money too and as long as the specs of the oil meet the manufactures specs, I cant see why they would not use a oil locally at a better price. Since I have seen no big Motorcraft oil tanker trucks. The best way to find out is "wonder" back into the garage area and see what the drums say. I think most will pleasantly surprised to see 10w30 is going into about everything, regardless of the manufactures specs. I have seen this at a couple of dealerships and about every quick lube. If you price the oil by the drum at a supplier, the 10w30 is "alot" cheaper, which is probably why alot of them go this route, its not a considerable savings for us, but on a 100+ cars it would be.

Nope, not the latest boron additives.

Also check out the Pennzoil Q&A for further evidence. I believe Chevron has been using a big dose of boron as a substitute/compliment for moly in Delo 400 LE for a good while now, now it seems like the other mainstream brands are following suit.
