I had tried M1 0-40 for 12 months and 12k miles. The oil held up OK but the wear numbers were poor. Went back to 4k miles on the 0-40 shown above. When I tried MC 5-20 I got fussy, changed the oil, ran the oil for a day then new filter and another fresh 6 qts of oil so there should not be any influence by the previous M1 in the engine.
The Motorcraft at less than half the price of M1 has good numbers. The M1 was drained Sept 10 and the Motorcraft was drained Jan 30. Considering the arctic weather we have had in NY lately the numbers for the Motorcraft I think are outstanding.
I would normally plan on going back to 5-30 in summer but after seeing the good posts for this oil last summer from some of the guys down south I think I have my year round oil of choice right here.
The consumption was as usual zero.
The inside of the aluminum head is as shiny as the day it left the dealer.

I believe that overall, going easy on the gas with both oils, I see just over 1 MPG due to the oil but it is hard to say just yet since the winter gas changeover, the below average temps, and snow during the period.
By March - April I will know for sure.

BTW I have begun following something that was suggested here - oil changes on months 2, 6, 10.
3 per year up from the 2 per year schedule that I have followed for many years.

2000 Contour
2.5 liter V-6
dbl overhead cams
nice 7000 RPM all-aluminum motor.
timing chains instead of belts.
it sees its' share of the upper RPM range.
45k miles

Nice! Only one interval on each but based on these numbers I don't see the need for the extra $$ for M1.

Wow Mark, I figured you'd be one of the last ones on the board to try a 20-weight oil. Nice report. Does Ford recommend 20-weight for this engine?

I've been thinking of trying a cheaper dino oil myself instead of the M1 0w-20 I've been running. I worry that the dino may leave more deposits. But I would only try it in the summer and go back to M1 in the winter.

Wear sure is pretty consistent right down the line between these two. Makes me want to run right out and spend the extra money on M1.

Maybe the M1 can go longer, but otherwise...

The MC did shear a bit, down to around 7.8. That's only a tad lower than a few other brands start, so not a big deal.

I'm sure there will be a few calls for a 5w30 or 0w30 run seeing if there is a sweet spot in between the 5w20 and 0w40.

All in all, another good report. Its starting to sound like a broken record!

I was a firm believer in thicker is better before Terry's input, results shown on this site concerning 20 wt. and my own UOA's on 2 of my 3 cars.
I would not have tried it however unless Ford gave the OK - maybe due to high volume oil pumps?
Checked the Ford site, Motorcraft site and sure enough all 3 of the family Fords now show 5-20 as the recommended oil. 98 Windstar 3.8, 99 Contour 2.0.
All now on a 5-20 diet.
