did a search didnt find a whole lot of info read its made buy conoco phillips.

it has a nice voa and a used oil analysis that i seen
has a starting tbn of 14.
rotella 5w40 was around 10 i think

i can get this in 5 quart jugs for 11.50 at my local walmart
i have a 7.3l turbo powerstroke it holds 15 quarts. that would be three jugs for around 35 bucks plus a $10 motorcraft filter.
i have been a huge lover of rotella 5w40 and delvac. but from what i seen motorcraft oil is a excellent oil at a cheaper price than all the other. before i do my next oil change wondering if there is any negative feed back on this oil.

i cant see any reason to not use it from price to voa's and used oil analysis even on extended drains is excellent..

thoughts

thanks

Rotella synthetic 5w-40 has a tbn of 10 compared to motorcraft conventional 15w40 with a tbn of 14?

If that's true, I am very impressed. I figured it to be the other way around with rotella 5w-40 being a full synthetic and a very fine oil.
With that said, I run MC 15w40 in my 6.0L diesel with no hiccups. I've got an 8oz shot of rev-x in my current fill and I'm very tempted to do a used oil analysis when I reach 6k miles.
At my local wally, the 5qt jug is 11.97 and I order my filters online with free shipping and I pay 13.00 for them. They are Racor filters which make Motorcraft.

As johnny stated the API rating on most diesel oils have changed. The TBN on the newer CJ-4 products are much less.A simpler way to put it is ULSD doesn't depleat the additve package like LSD did.

Delvac and Delo both have a higher TBN (10.5) then motorcraft does.

I was just reviewing all of the Shell tech sheets on their diesel oils and here is the current TBN numbers.

Rotella T3 15w40 - TBN 10.6

Rotella T5 10w30 and 10W-40 blend - TBN 10.0

Rotella T6 5W-40 synthetic - TBN 10.6

Agreed. I cannot think of any CJ-4 that has a TBN much over 10; some are less. Doesn't really matter though for two reasons.
1) The sulphur is way down in the fuel, the oil and the additives. There is less need for TBN as the decay rate of TBN is now much lesser with ULSD.
2) VERY few people leave the oil in long enough to really make it topic of contention anyway ...

Is MC 15w40 good HDEO? Sure is. And so are a bunch of other brands. Any more, I'm convinced that a certified lube will do everything expected over "normal" intervals, often regardless of severity. Typically a poor UOA is a result of outside considerations such as intrusion by coolant, dirt, etc. Can't fairly blame the oil for that.

I marvel at times how people (including myself) debate things that rarely, if ever, come into play.
TBN? not an issue when you OCI every 5-7k miles
Additives? if one is low, another is bolstered to compensate; the overall packages are competent
Viscosity? thinner has shown to be every bit as good as thicker, when used within OEM guildlines

Want a good oil? Find several of the brand names you recogize that meet the correct spec and grade for your application, then buy the least expensive one for your planned OCI. MC is good stuff; it you like the price, buy it!

Exactly what I do! I'm a cheapie!

Like to see an analysis of this oil. That's a high TBN for a CJ-4 oil.

I just checked the API website and neither the name of this company or the name of this product show up on their API approval list. If API approval is important to you or who you work for, you might want to ask them for a copy of their API license.

Only reason I checked on this is because 99% of the oils meeting API CJ-4 do not have TBN numbers this high. Kind of makes me question if it really does meet the CJ-4 spec.

Last stat I saw from MC on this oil the TBN was 8, that was the CJ formula as well. Given how well the other MC products are Id say this oil is a good one, though Delvac and Rotella are selling for the same around here.

I'd also like to see some actual documentation validating API CJ-4 with a TBN of 14; that seems really high for a CJ-4 lube. Also, with the sulphated ash at 1.2%, I don't know that they can qualify for API CJ-4; isn't that to be limited to 1% max? When I read the text, it really seems at though they are doing the dance around the actual certification. Lot's of "formulated for" and stuff like that. They do clearly state "API Approvals" list, but I just wonder if some marketing hype isn't going on here. Especially if Johnny can't find their license info; he'd know where to look.

OTOH, I'd like to think you get a little something extra for $6/qrt!!! Yikes, that's steep. They do comment on extended drain intervals, but they don't specifically mention any high-end base stocks. Makes me wonder just what this stuff really is. And if it's the same stuff that's in your UOA posting, and there you noted that it's "conventional" oil, then I REALLY think you're not getting your value out of this unless you greatly extend the OCI.

Regarding the test kit, just call Blackstone and you can get kits for free; the analysis with TBN is around $35 including shipping costs. You can also look at Cat and Amsoil dealers for less money, but also less "personal" interaction.

Fire-Rob, how often do you guys OCI your equipment?
