I was walking through the local grocery store, which is part of a large nation wide chain, and I noticed in the very small auto section, they only carry straight 30 weight and straight 40 weight quarts, but what caught my eye is that all the bottles clearly said "NON DETERGENT" on the front. I would like to think they carry this stuff because it sells, but who's buying it????? Short of the pump on my pressure washer, nothing I own takes a straight weight non-detergent oil. I am sure there is the typical people that don't know any better that buy it, which I expect to happen...but is there something I am missing????? Does this stuff sell better than I think it does? My local walmart and auto parts stores don't even sell non detergent oil. I guess I have a source for it when I need it...but is there more of a need than I am realizing????

It's a scam. Someone approached that store's buyer with, hey, here's some Health & Beauty stuff you can mark up 400%!
Most of my grocery stores have API certified Citgo synthetic blend as their "OMG my car is down a quart, get me anything" solution. Market Basket even has Dex Mer ATF for $2.99/qt, about on par with walmart.

Literally the only reason they and drugstores carry oil is for the "omg I need oil right now" market. At that point you can charge whatever you want and people will pay it.

The "omg" citgo syn blend is sometimes of sale for 3.69!
I think the people on this board have more common sense than the average person. Ill walk across the street to dollar general to buy peak oil, a decent oil rather than buy some unknown nd junk from the grocery store
My local grocery store sells this stuff...interesting that it says "compare to Pennzoil" on the front.

All one needs to do is look for the API rating. If it is not there, don't chance it and move on. There is a website that tests many of these off brands, and many have serious flaws. Anyway, there is no reason to put a non-detergent oil in an automobile in the first place. If it was in a hardware store, it would make sense, since non-detergent oils are commonly used in air compressors.
