Hey Guys,

I have a 2008 Honda Rancher I just acquired...its not been taken care of well at all but fortunately only has 1500 miles on it. I just had a pile of work done on it at the dealership but will taking over maintenance myself.

My question is...what is the most economical oil that is JASO certified as I need something that will be wet-clutch apropreate. I was hoping to use super tech 15w40 but it doesnt appear it carries the cert. The Rotella products do of course but are double the price and honestly with a once a year oil change and light usage id rather not waste the money paying for a label.

Valvoline Motorcyle oil, Jaso certified. $4 a quart at Walmart last I checked, $1 more in auto parts stores. 10/40 or 20/50 your choice. Other economical option is Rotella 15/40 NOT Jaso certified but they claim to meet their specs.

Sure about that? They use "meets or exceeds" language in the product data sheet, with no JASO oil code listed.

I just checked my garage. You are right. Appears that Valvoline self certifies, and claims that it will work. I think Shell also self certifies the Rotella product as well.

I'd happily use Valvoline or Shell Rotella.

For a 2008, the appropriate viscosity is 10w-30. This eliminates the 10w-40/15w-40/20w-50's that will be mentioned.
Pro Honda GN4 10w-30 is $25/gallon delivered to your front door, and is JASO certified (M061HMC270).

i've been using Walmart ST and tractor supply travellers in my atv and utv and dirtbikes for years. no issues.

If Rotella is too rich for your blood, you may be better off selling the Rancher and buying a donkey or something.
I haven't seen a JASO MA labeled oil that costs less, whether "self-certified" (never bothered me) or officially licensed and listed by JASO.

Thanks Ramblejam....I didn't know. The owners manual is missing and I was going off what the atv dealer suggested.

Wang...its not that anything is too rich for my blood...I simply won't pay additional money for no additional benefit. You can offer no evedence of Rotellas superiority...if you choose to pi$$ money away it's youre choice. Please don't respond to my posts if all you can contribute is sarcasm and uninformed opinions.

Sp you aren't looking for the most economical choice, you are looking for the cheapest choice. In that case, 711 probably sells some non resource conserving or energy conserving oil that's right up your alley.

Shell Rotella in the blue jug is 5W-40, but it's on the thin side of that 40. It is JASO certified.
And motorcycle riders have been using it for years and years.

My 2¢

You asked for the least expensive JASO MA labeled oil. Myself and several others said that would be Rotella. You said you didn't want to pay that much.
Your choices are pretty much oils that will have a very high probability of working fine, but do not bear the labeling to indicate that they have been tested by anyone to the JASO MA standard, these would include just about any HDEO, Supertech among them.
The alternative to oil that has a very high probability of working fine, but isn't labeled, is oil that is labeled. The least expensive of those choices, based on my market research for my own applications, is Rotella.
My opinions are fairly informed. I share them to be helpful. If you don't like them, I believe that there is an "ignore" function on this forum.

You are correct! I am wrong. AS I typed it the other morning, I was second guessing myself.
The Jaso certified oil is Castrol, again, sold in some Walmarts (like one near us but not all), the price is $1 more a quart. Can also be bought in places like Autozone $1 more a quart. I think right now, dont quote me on this, Walmart has the Castrol semi syn on sale for $6 a quart.

I used the Valvoline 20/50 in my Metrics in our long hot summers and 15/40 diesel oil in the winter. Again, you are correct, like most major oil companies only claims to meet Jaso, not certified.
Castrol is one oil that is certified.

Ive been off motorcycle oil since summer of 2014 its when I traded in my last metric for a Harley Road King. Since the Road King has seperate sumps for trans, primary and engine. The oil recommended by Harley, if not using their oil is diesel oil, which is what I use.

^^^ That
Honestly, not sure where you are seeing the Rotella 15/40 pricing to think that its expensive. Its less then $15 a gallon in Walmart. Its a bargain, as any of the diesel oils.
But thats what this thread started out as.

But now you may want a 10w30 from what I read, you will need to be a bit more careful with the 10w30 and wet clutch. Rotella does have such an oil but not sure what the claims are.

Personally at this point depending if you are going to stick to a 10/30 or 15/40 I would suggest you not think any further and go as someone else suggested here, since you seem to be inbetween two grades of thought.
I would without question go with the Rotella T6 5/40 full synthetic. It will pretty much give you the performance of the 10/30 and 15/40 you were considering and it claims to meet Jaso.
The Rotella 5/40 is also known to shear a bit in shared sumps but for you that is fine also because the worst the Rotella can shear down to is a 30 anyway.
