Most disturbing US documentary I've seen: OBESITY

I'm about to stop weight lifting and just focus on running all together.

If you're a mesomorph, you're probably outside of preferred norms from some perspectives. Everyone is supposed to look like they just checked out of Club Dead's refugee camp.

Have you seen the size of wheelchairs in a hospital ?

They are no longer 'regular' sized. All the wheelchairs are extra large for all the pathetic fat people.

I was in for a short procedure and they decided to admit me for the night. It appeared to be the incredibly obese room. That is, it was used as storage for mega obese apparatus. I sorta imagined how Andre the Giant probably felt ..but inside out. I was a dwarf in The Land of the Giants. The wheel chair was so wide it would just navigate the doorway ..and there was a chair that was its equal too. The shower/lav could only get described suitable for a pit crew to service whatever was in the bay.

The bed, which I figure they rolled in just for me, was normal.

When you call people fat, whatever the term yet they have a disability that hinders or even worse prevents them from any type of exercise then your turn around calling them pathetic do you wonder why we have to make laws for disability discrimination... I know some of these are overboard, but I also would assume many could care less as well and just as rather be dead than here, the only problem is when they are here they would like to be not pain FREE just a few hours a day relief from pain... I guess I'm on the other end of the spectrum of this thread, yet I'm have very low body fat percentage (3% if i recall correct, however I also walk about 12 miles or more a day 4 days a week).

I think this is the article, just New Scientist online is rubbish now to search, and I'm not paying to view.

http://www.newscientist.com/article/mg17223214.900-hard-cheese.html

Article was about acid/alkaline balance, muscle and bone development.

The scientists found that lemons as a fruit alkalised, juice acidified, same with oranges. Soft cheeses alkalised, hard cheeses acidified, and (IIRC, it's a while since I read the mag), white turkey meat acidified, while dark alkalised. Usual suspects in the vege world alkalised.

The speculation with citrus was that the unjuiced portion had the alkalising agents.

Hi Shannow,

Thank you for your response. I drink my organge juice, which I press myself, with all the pulp stirred back in. Since I am not a citrus fruit expert, I don't know if the potassium is in the solids that may not end up in the juice. On the other hand, lemon juice is said to be alkalizing. As far as I know, lemon juice comes never with the pulp in it. That means that at least in the case of lemons, juicing does not reduce the amount of potassium. A search regarding the acidity of orange juice points at orange juice having a pH of 3.5.

In my estimation, moderate intake of juice will not conjure up health issues. Even eating too many apples can be bad for you. The acid in them can dissolve tooth enamel.

Cheers,

John, you appear to be well versed on the topic ..and Shannow may be "tied up down under" so to speak. Can you answer the rhetorically presented question so we're not all in knots with the suspense in not knowing?

Hi Gary,

Asking questions to which I already know or at least believe to know the answer is not my custom. Do you do that sort of thing?

Cheers,

I've got to be careful, as I love eating a quarter of a lemon after greasy fish and chips, and am a heavy scrubber when it comes to tooth brushing. I've thinned the enamel a couple of times, and it can be quite shocking/painful.

I think the "fat" hate needs to stop. Seriously for whatever reason some people are obese. It doesn't give you a right to hate on them or make fun of them. Some of you are like kids and your rational/behavior is wrong.

Well, it's like economic functionality and poverty. You'll never hear a low income person citing the same rhetoric as a person of substance. A person of substance ..who falls from grace won't be reciting the same tenets that he did as a productive member viewing from above. All of a sudden the perspective changes.

That is, most of the people criticizing the morbidly obese never had a problem with weight. It wasn't some superior discipline nor internal fortitude ...nothing but the fact that they just never had issue with it. I understand the leaning. They can't relate to it. They also probably blind to some other defect in their own life that's invisible to the casual eye. I'm sure that we're all of the same basic quivering mass of humanity at our core.

Pain free? It's a status I hope to attain.

Our company makes a product called a "patient lift". It's basically an engine hoist to lift big patients in or out of beds and chairs.

I'd have to agree. People's looks should be lower on the "important list." Some of the best people I've ever met in life have been overweight by society's standards.

A natural evolution in physical aids where an aging population is hurting themselves doing stuff the old fashion way. It's what made the automotive industry look easy. It wasn't always that way.

They didn't have this type of "strata lifter" when my father bloated to over 450lb in the burn unit due to the requirements of fluid infusion and cardiac output. Gotta keep the balloon inflated even if it's leaking like a sieve. It was quite a challenge for them to manage him. They had him on a Clinitron® until the edema exceeded its width capacity, they then had a maintenance man physically bolt two beds together.

I'm not making fun of fat people, I'm being more aware of the Obesity problem in the USA. It's really bad!!!!

It is certainly problematic that the rates of obesity have climbed so much. Especially in children, who aren't really capable of the decision making required to stay fit.

As for looking down on or making of of fat people, I think this happens because fitness is taken as a proxy for other things - self respect, self control, decision making, responsibility, etc. Right or wrong, we judge people based on appearances.

True; and to some of us, judging people is an indication of the quality of character (or lack thereof) of the one doing the judging!

It is not about looking down or discriminating people of different size, but this is a health issue that can impact people you know.

My problem is people started using fast and comfort food instead of dealing with problems in their life. 2 extra hours in commute and dinner at drive through. Use sugar and caffeine rush to deal with stress and let the kid eat only fries and chicken nuggets for dinner instead of vegetables and other real food that doesn't taste as good. It is a fact of life in a more stressful, time limited society, because what the older generations enjoy (more time, family together for dinner, kids playing outdoor) are now considered luxury.

Those are the things we're compelled to sacrifice to maintain some alleged status. The core purpose of your life is to chase a buck instead of truly having a family and what it's supposed to mean. We've been given a set of values that aren't all that well thought out when it comes to what's good for your children. We think that happiness can only come out of a wallet. While I do totally understand where misery can come out of an empty one, I really have to question the wisdom of running in a race where there is no finish line and only more alleged benefit for more effort applied. At some point one would think that running in a squirrel cage is truly getting nowhere.

Well I will also add I do think many companies are trying to make healthier food at the drive thru what have you... I'm guilty of feeding myself, and my kids at the fast food joints (choke & pukes) more times than not... my reason is the very reason posted above is luxury of time I just don't have !! I'm a single parent with two kids working a 12 hour swing shift and very lucky to have a job in the industry I'm in... So I keep going on, however even with my horrid style of feeding my kids fast food more times than a home cooked meal I still find a way to get some fruits, and veggies in their life... and to infuse that as to how much better it is not only in taste but for you.. Yes I go into the entire explanation on how these fruits/vegetables help everything from dry skin, to bowel movements...

Now for those that throw much of this good food out for you here is a few items of my list hat I bet most of you indulge in... Bread that you buy at the store you can call it whatever you want wheat white brown black green even potato it's not what home cooked bread is, and is not nearly as good for you I'm guilty here as I don't cook bread either.. How many of you drink from the udder of a bovine ? Do you realize how nasty this is not only are you drinking breast milk from the udder of a filthy animal you pasteurize it, whip it, curd it, mold it then chunk it into your gut... just from another perspective would you drink human breast milk sold at stores ?? NO that would be the utmost nasty yet you drink from the UDDER OF A BOVINE !!!!
