Mine would do this on the same stretch of freeway, they patched a chunk of asphalt and it went from light gray, to black, to light gray. Was pretty scary the first time it happened.

The new company Transit has it too-a splash of water from a puddle hits the windshield at the wrong angle, the collision alert goes nuts. It's done it at 2 MPH in a parking lot... Glad to see Ford doesn't have an excusive on stupid ideas!

Maybe for now, until vehicles do not false brake, what we should all be doing is leaving enough following distance so that if the vehicle in front of you did suddenly lock up all four wheels you would have enough distance to react and stop before slamming into it.

The downside of it is that we as humanity may become too lazy to think for ourselves.
They are already on that path. All the assisted driving nannies are making people become more and more disconnected from actually using their brain to drive, and instead focus on other things (like phone usage while "driving") because they are slowly putting more and more "trust" in the car to do the "driving". Even car commercials reflect this aspect.

While todays computers can not think, in the future computers will reach a point where the speed combined with vast amounts of memory and vast amounts of programing will not only enable computers to make decisions emulating thinking but also out thinking humans both in terms of capability and speed.
They may be able to make a fly that has all the moves of a fly, but never be a fly with a brain that thinks.

Collision alert like that isn’t so bad as false collision braking. Especially to a stop.

Like watching the Tv.

I have a Tesla and it did something a bit like this last week. Driving at what passes for highway speeds in this area (80 Km/hr or 50 MPH). A vehicle (a half ton truck) from the oncoming traffic crossed in front of me. There was no issue and I wouldn't have even slowed down but my Tesla braked fairly heavily, down to about 20 or 30 Km/hr, then sped up again.

The only real danger would have been getting rear ended.

This sounds a bit like that situation where the Tesla Model S failed to recognize the semi trailer truck doing much the same thing. That Tesla ran under the trailer and the driver was killed. So maybe they over react in that sort of situation.

I feel left out here. My Mazda has activated the emergency braking just two times since I bought it in 2017. In both cases a car pulled out in front of me.

This was one thing that made me get rid of my 2020 Accord, same thing happened to me a couple of times and it scared the you know what outta me.
that "feature" can be turned off. my 19 did it to me twice. so i pulled over and found a way to disable it. and the adaptive CC is off also. so it's like a normal car again.

Simply can't agree with that realistically happening... regardless of how advanced some things in life might become do remember that it's still human thought process designing/building what does become available.

Companies incorporating this sort of garbage will not get my business, especially the lame auto industry. Simply won't have a car trying to drive, swerve, brake for me. Don't even trust cruise control which is the most wasted 'feature' in any vehicle.

I guess it’s a 1980 Citation for you then. This stuff has been in cars for a while now.

Computers are getting smarter. As an example, my iPhone alerted me about a month ago that I was becoming increasingly unsteady and my fall risk had increased to a level where I needed to be aware. Now I could just shrug it off as a nuisance alert or take it seriously. The iPhone also recommended different exercises I can do to help improve my steadiness.

Now I think that is valuable for a senior like me. I also think these new systems in cars are just as valuable. They pay for themselves the first time they help you avoid a collision.

While it may not happen in our life time, there probably will come a time when vehicles have no steering wheel, brake petal, gas petal, or any thing else the occupants, will have to intreact with during transit to guide the vehicle. And if all vehickes that are made are like that it will be only a matter of time until vehicles that did not have those features are too old to keep on the road.

They call it Tomorrowland.

LOL they haul @aa through intersections, catch on fire, now they 'decide' to stop. If they weren't on the road, it would be good entertainment!

I will be happy to stay with a 2005 porsche 911 or cayman with manual trans. No lane assist. No auto braking. No self driving. I will be fine in those cars until I am dead. Throw in a 2012 tundra or sequoia for winter use. Dont like the auto trans. But they work of.

I hate auto crap. Give me as much a manual trans and no tech and i am good. I am not playing with screens and this new junk.

I can understand why some folks think a super electronic computer loaded car would be desireable. The less you like cars the more the car can and will do for you.

For me the tesla is just huge money with poor quality build and design. 12 grand to swap the battery pack.
The new tesla design has the battery pack glued into the car aluminum structure. So you get in an accident or the batteries go bad. No problem... just spend another 90 to 125 grand and replace the car.
Tesla wont allow shops info to service them or sell parts to them. Its like apple. They forgot you paid the money and bought the car. Its still the property of apple or tesla and they are in charge of it.
That thinking.. the complex systems.. the poor fit and finish and problems keeping the car happy in cold are reasons i hate tesla.
I want a manual trans. Few computers.. and non direct fuel injection. Anti lock brakes are ok...but no start stop stuff. No lane assist...no get coffee icon cause the car is staring at my eyes and thinks i should stop a while.
If electric car sales go way up. How will the overly taxed grid manage ?
