United Animal Friends got a call from a shelter in NW Arizona, a very pregnant dog was brought in and was going to be put down because they don't have the ability to handle a mama and puppies for 8 weeks. Our answer was of course we will take her. While transfer arrangements were being made a mama dog and 3 puppies were brought in that had been dumped in the parking lot at a flea market. No problem we'll take them too. The white/brown mama gave birth to 8 almost when she got out of the van the other day. The black mama's puppies are a couple of weeks old starting to move around. The white dog is gentle and friendly to everyone and the black dog is calm and observant. Both families are in a 12 x 16 shed that we divided and outfitted to raise puppies. 13 dogs saved that will go to great homes. I'm lucky to be involved with UAF.

These dogs are in the shed to the right. The small shed behind the car is empty right now waiting for the next family. Both have heat and A/C.

And got an update on our last foster dog Shorty, he's doing great, his new people couldn't be happier, and they had him to their vet for a health check that UAF covers. Why we do what we do.(y)
Great!
One of the things I found to be difficult when we were fostering..
Most of the time, you never learn how the dog´s story turns out.
Some pleasant exceptions, some unpleasant and some just flat bizarre!

Bait Dog/Boscoe
At our local SPCA for a field day.
Our handler approaches, I have a pup I want you to meet and consider fostering, but I have to warn you.
Young, very small male pup, Shepherd?
Used as fodder to train dogs to fight. Put the dog or cat in a burlap bag, the fighting dog tries to kill what´s in the bag.
This poor little guy was sutured from his neck to his groin.
Decades later I still react emotionally just writing about it.
We had him for about three weeks,
Medically all he needed were warm moist compresses applied to his wound.
What a sweet little guy, even after all he had been through.

The vet tech called him Bait Dog.
When we got him in the car to drive home I told my wife he needs a real name.
I named him Boscoe on the spot.

Can someone please explain to me how a person becomes sub-human to treat an animal like this?

I can't explain it. All I can tell you (IMHO) there is a very special place in the after life (where it is very hot and miserable) for those who abuse animals.

Jeff, you are an honest-to-God hero!

We donate to the local shelters and try our best, but my senior dog and pup wouldn't do well hosting. Wish we could.

We have a now 15 YO male cattledog who has never liked other dogs and a 7 YO female cattledog who takes a while to warm up to people and other dogs and thought the same thing but wanted to give it a try. With the proper introductions and supervision for the first day we haven't had any fur fly. We've now had 6 foster dogs with no problems and only kept 1. The worst way to introduce dogs is to bring a new dog onto your dog's territory and let them go nose to nose with leashes tight. Best way is to meet on neutral ground and take the dogs for a walk together keeping them apart until you can see them relax and let them do a little butt sniff while still walking and they get to know each other. It's magic. Having these different dogs has been good for our dogs too. We're taking a foster break right now got other things happening but we'll have more.

Dogs have been bred to want to be with people and all they want is to have someone to love and be loved. There is true evil in some people.
