Ok so I just bought the 5qts with fram tough guard at autozone for 17.99. I changed my oil as soon as I got home and I promise you I hear more valve clatter now then I did before. My previous oil was Pennzoil 5W20 and now its the valvoline synpower 10W30. I have a 96 ranger with the 2.3 that is spec'd for 5W30 from the factory and back spec'd for 5W20. When im at speed its nice and smooth and can't tell a difference so far. But at idle there is definitely a difference in noise. Im not worried because I know valvoline synpower is a very good oil and I know 10W30 works great in this engine because there was a post some time ago with pics of this engine well over 100K miles that looked so clean you could eat of it, and it had a healthy diet of 10W30 and 5K mile OCI's.

I should have mentioned that I have previously tried many different weights from 5w20 to 15w40. This was the most significant change in noise between any of the different oils. I wonder if it was the moly in the Pennzoil?

I've got a 2.3 and I'm running 5w30 Synpower and everything has been fine. Why aren't you running the 5w30?

No reason in particular. In fact I bought some 5W30 while I was at it and plan on using it the next oil change which should be when the weather is cooling off. The only reason I went with the 10W30 this time was those pics of the 2.3 that had 10W30 its entire life and looked brand new and it had well over 100K miles. Its summer here in Florida and the I thought the 10W30 could not hurt.

It's got to be the whacky FRAM filter that's causing the noise by restricting flow at start up and idle speeds; that's what I'm thinking.

I had read some pretty good things on here regarding the toughguard filters. Found out they are even the same design Honda uses on the factory filters. But none the less I am thinking about swapping that filter out now.

Also be aware that when changing oils sometimes it takes awhile for the oil to full seat in your engine. You are replacing one additive package with another and it can take a few thousand miles to fully become adjusted to your engine. (some cases not all)

Ok thanks Buster. So you think I should just leave everything alone and not worry? That toughguard looks pretty good from just my observation.

It could be the filter, but YES, stay with it. I think you'll find it will subside either during this OCI or the next change.

Thats cool. Thanks so how about this question, if it is indeed the filter and the noise is from reduced flow at idle, how much damage could I be doing?
