Curious!
Run 5w30 of PPPP and see if it occurs again. It's a very marginal increase in @100 viscosity and a cold winter is not a threat in Florida. 5W is plenty good for cold startups there in your coldest months.

You might be surprisingly happy at the results.

Yes, back in 2003-2004 models.
 
There's no way that's metal from the engine. The used oil analysis shows nothing and if the bearings were shedding that much, a rod would have gone through the oil pan by now. This is the same reason you don't judge fuel dilution by smell.
