More BMW shenanigans - enter SaaS (Suspension-as-a-Service)

In Silicon Valley, we have a term, "Fail fast". There are those who say, "That won't work", "You can't do that", "That's stupid", "We do it this way", etc. Many times they are right.

To be better, by definition, you have to be different.
Actually your sentence isn't necessarily true. Being different doesn't make you by definition better. Standing out doesn't even remotely mean better. The Cybertruck is a prime example. Very different but so far inferior to every truck on the road.

SV has produced many great things, but some there like the smell of their own farts too much, and believe that being rich makes them always right, and when confronted, they try to use their money as blunt instruments to fight back. Some have even taken to playing the victim card while doing so.

It has become readily apparent that whatever professed altruistic goals that did play some role in driving the boom springing from the internet have been shoved aside, and now it's plainly all about making money. That's not unique to the industry, and age old practice, but that thin veneer that existed before has been ripped off and tossed in the dumpster.

A lot of the dumb ideas hatched also survive because a lot of the people charged with bringing them to market don't dogfood. Including employees from a well-known SV-born car AI company.
 
After 12 BMWs since 1983 I turned to the Dark Side and picked up a Mercedes AMG. The current styling (or lack thereof) coupled with the tacked-on digital display which has most every function hidden in the touchscreen submenus was the last straw.
As for the subscription model, BMW should know better. Originally you could only get CarPlay bundled with the nav system and you also had to pony up an additional $300 and pay an annual subscription fee. You can imagine how well that went over.
I was shocked to see the new Acura ZDX has a tacked on digital display. It's almost 2025. Well past the time when auto makers should have digital displays fully integrated like Kia.

The point is thar if you want to be a lot better, you need to be a lot different. You might fail or succeed but the same old same old isn't going to break new ground.
 
What sucks about this is those that dont want the suspension upgrade still have to replace with the expensive components when getting repaired.
 
Going digital allows for OTA updates which opens the door to so many possibilities. Will there be mistakes, stupid stuff, etc? Sure, just ask Elon. But it is all part of development.

In 10 years the increasing rate of change, driven by electronics (and AI) will put us in a new world.

And this is why I bought a 5th gen 4Runner.

Joking around aside you could be correct. One of the reasons the luxury makers like electric propulsion and the move to tech is it means you are forcing the consumer into a pretty regular and predictable upgrade cycle. Cars with this level of technology just aren’t going to be kept more than 7-10 years and it allows that replacement cycle to be calculated with some certainty and then the model can be monetized. You might even get an upgrade charge monthly that allows you to get a new car faster and more frequently the way you do with a cell phone.

From me personally I want nothing to do with any company that wants to put me on a treadmill financially.

There will be more and more of this, driven by tech. In manufacturing, a simpler BOM is desirable and engineers always work towards this.

Will some be silly? Sure. That's the price. BMW, IMO, is engaging in exploitation.

Subscription services do nothing but add another revenue stream for shareholders. Infinite growth!
 
There is a huge difference between having electronics and hosing the consumer behind a paywall. If consumers put their foot down this won't happen. John Deere is seeing fewer orders why? Because they require you to use them for everything. Don't be a pushover and say "well it's bound to happen. " This is what allows it to happen. Unreal.
Hosing the consumer….when I bought my BMW new 10/06, ordered, they called me 1 1/2 weeks later, “Marcy forgot to add the training and MACO fees.” Wanted me to come back and sign a new bill of sale $650 more. I said no give the allocation to someone else. Sales mgr said come in and look at my screen. It’s a legit fee that everybody pays. I said well I don’t do things this way so cancel it. Puts me on hold, comes back, ok, you don’t have to pay it.

Anybody who has purchased a BMW new, rhetorically ask yourself if you paid training and MACO. Google it. Car cos will always hose the consumer if that’s what it’s called. They’re running a business and have something many want.

What’s a new Z06 for $90,000 over list called?

Edit fact checked myself and google says $~$600 for those fees.

BMW is like Apple. The brand name is very valuable. Like the New York Yankees.

When the Takata airbag scandal broke, which car company gave out loaners to anyone with a pulse. Sometimes for 1 year+?

BMW

Mercedes Benz stated there have been no deaths attributable to Takata airbags and therefore loaner cars are not warranted.

Quite different positions on the same subject, because all of the mfgs were sued via class action.

The only Japanese car co that did anything was Honda. They did experience deaths. All of the other Japanese mfgs did this
