More BMW problems.

With VANOS it is, from what I understand, often just the solenoids, not the actual units themselves, which are very robust and tend to be lifetime.

From what I can gather people are getting their lifters replaced, and often just a whole new ( updated) head.

Great find!

Hi Guys,

Thanks my head was already the new one ... improved.

I will take the belts off and listen to it ..

The valve lifter problem causes a clicking noise, not a growling noise. It goes away after you drive the car for an extended period of time which purges air out of the lifters. If you make lots of short trips, you get the clicking noise

I got mechanic Stethoscope so I will try to use it to pin point noise ...

Don't worry about revving an 'unloaded' engine to those moderate RPM.
This was always considered bad, but I have studied it and found no reason for it.m Won't hurt a thing.

I too have dispelled this rumor. One thing that could cause trouble in the past were slow reacting rev-limiters that would not react fast enough in neutral, allowing you to free-rev an engine well beyond redline. I think Ford was the first to detect an engine being revved in neutral and engage the limiter early (in the first SHO) knowing that if it waited any longer it could be too late.
