more atf fluid drained than was expected

Few days ago I drained my atf from my truck so that I could replace the filter. Usually when i do this I get out 7.5 qts.

This time I removed 10 qts, measured using a drain pan with markings. Had to take the Mazda over to advance to get more atf +4

Reason for replacing the filter was it seemed to have a failed adbv. When I would set out in the morning the trans wouldn't engage for about 3 or 4 seconds.

The new Mopar filter has fixed this issue so far. Old one was a Wix that had about 5k miles on it. Ive used Wix once before on this trans with no issues.

Could the extra fluid be from the possible bad filter? Or is it possible my torque converter has an issue?

Was the vehicle parked on level ground , each time . Had you given it more time to sit & " drain down " .

I am guessing it is a Dodge ?

yep same level spot each time. i only let it drain (more like drip) while i cleaned the pan and mating surfaces. about 45 min id say.

sorry should have specified that its a dodge ram with the 545rfe transmission

Kind of thinking , how long had it been sitting , before you drained it ? I was just wondering about how much drains down from the torque converter ?

Mind you , I know little about auto transmissions and zero about current Dodge transmissions .

I worked as a flunky at a Dodge dealership in 1970 & helped the mechanics some . Long time ago . ;-)

Of course , back then it was common for torque converters to have a drain plug . Shame they got away from that . :-(

i actually had driven it before i started, so that the fluid would be hot. i used a small impact wrench to remove all the bolts so that only took about 10 minutes.
