Mopar oil filter gasket seal issue

Had a slow leak around the Mopar oil filter I bought at Wal-Mart for my 98 Dodge Ram. Did oil change last night and the rubber gasket seal actually bowed off and out of the groove in the filter upon removal. That is the first time I have ever had that happen with any filter I have used. I always inspect before I put on and I did not notice a problem when I put on initially. Definetly did not seem too tight either when I removed. First time I have purchaed and personally used the Mopar filter. Replaced with a Fram Tough Gard that came as part of an oil change special at AZ. Usually do not use Fram oil filters, but the TG did seem quite a bit heavier than the standard Fram when I compared them in the store. Silicone ADBV as well, definitly thicker walled via the hand compression test. We will see how it goes.

You never said, but I'm assuming you lube the new oil filter's gasket before installing it?

It's pretty common for the rubber gasket to try and stick to the engine block when the filter is removed.

This is the probable cause. Failing to oil the gasket when installing is the #1 failure in oil filters. It will stretch and stress the gasket.
