Mopar Oil Filter at Wal-Mart

The Vestal, NY store has a small supply of a single part number oil filter, (M-090) or something like that.
The price is about $4.25. (plus 8.5% tax)
The little DCX application sheet hanging near the filters showed the same filter (090) fitting just about every DCX vehicle ever made except the 2.4L used in PT Cruisers and Jeep Wrangler SEs.
The filter did say made in the USA.
This is the first time I've ever seen any Mopar branded products in a Wal-Mart

I spotted the Mopar filters at my Walmart last night.

I saw larger and smaller Mopar filter at my Wal-mart, around $6 each, I think. Also, Mopar ATF+4. Don't remember the price of ATF.

So, who thinks these are the identical items to what comes from a ChryCo dealership and who thinks it's something else that is licensed to use the Mopar name?

It's both. DC doesn't make any of their oil filters. They source it out to whomever offers the best deal. And the vendor changes from lot to lot.

So the Mopar filter could be a Wix, or a Fram. Both have been observed inside.

Bottom line: a Mopar branded filter is always a mystery selection. IMO, there are better known choices at that price, or for slightly more.

Volvohead, I do realize that a label like Mopar can and will choose whatever vendor it wants at the moment. I guess what I'm really getting at is that this seems like a monumental slap in the face to the dealer network (though I suppose it's the same for Ford and Motorcraft). So, I thought perhaps this was not quite the same thing as the dealer-source Mopar units.

They have them at the Wal-Mart near my residence up here in Central Maine. There is a very limited selection, and they are pretty big, maybe truck filters or something. I thought it was strange too, because the only oil filters I had seen that belonged to a specific car company there were Motorcraft. Back in the day, they used to carry AC Delco, but they got rid of them for some terrible reason.

Well, if they want to keep the dealers happy, then they better make them worse than what the dealers get. And that isn't a very appealing prospect either, considering what they send the dealers.

I frankly don't think the Germans give the old Chrysler brands and names all that much respect. Dr. Z and German engineering? Gimme a break. Any old time Mopar guy would vomit at that.

I think that it was a travesty when Chrysler was bought out by Daimler. Chrysler was always a fine example of true American ingenuity, especially back in the sixties/early seventies. Their muscle cars were really something else, and such unique colors and styling for that time. These are the guys who put Top Banana and Plum Crazy on the map! Nowadays, yellow is such a popular color option. As much as I love my GM cars, I've always had great respect for Chrysler/Dodge/Plymouth, and I really wouldn't mind sporting one of those 440 six packs in the future, if there's any healthy ones left!
