Moody Napa Silver filter

My newly installed Napa Silver filter is giving me inconsistent results during cold startups.

The WIX and Mobil 1 filters ticked loudly during startup and quietly at warm idle. The TG occasionally quietly ticked at startup but always went away with about a minute of idle time. The Mopar filter only ticked a few times during its 5000 OCI, but it was also during
The Silver filter will either be quiet at start up and at idle, or tick quietly.. and continue to tick quietly about 10-15 minutes down the road while engine is at temperature. It will eventually go away, but from what I have noticed, it takes exceptionally longer than my other 2 lucky filters.

Why do you attribute the ticking to the oil filter? I would understand if it was a tick for a few seconds, perhaps indicating a dry start with an empty filter, but that is not what you are describing. What you describe could be a noisy lifter, or a sheet metal shroud, or an exhaust leak. What is doesn't sound like is an empty oil filter.

I like the lifter idea. Sometimes on shutdown the cam stops while compressing it, sometimes not.

I would attribute the noise to something being mechanically wrong. It makes sense. But a quiet engine is possible with the Mopar filter.. That's where the math just doesn't add up.

the oil filter is full and pressurized within 2-3s or less.. so if the ticking lasts longer than that... probably not the oil filter.

In my Sable, there is a minor tick in the engine that I originally thought might be part of the valvetrain, but eventually determined to be the fuel injectors.

Have you verified where the sound is coming from?

Its not the filter my friend
After startup the filter has nothing to tick about

I appreciate all the input guys, but I still feel it is the oil filter. I could go install a Mopar and have no tick whatsoever. I even said I had less of a tick with the Fram TG.

The fact that I am getting such differing results is what is boggling to me.

Install a Mopar filter. Made by Purolator and is great quality. I cut one open and posted the pictures recently. Go check them out. Solid filters

I know the MO-90s for my Dodge look just like rebadeged Purolators. Maybe I am wrong, what do you think?

^^^ Looks more like a Motorcraft with those bumps on the end cap. Besides, how can it be a Purolator ... there's no tears in it. LOL

I have never seen a tear yet! But then again, I just started cutting open filters recently. Only time will tell!

It wont. Purolator craftsmanship + MOPAR quality = Engine running like a champ

Not thinking your running tick was the filter either. Other than start up, noise is rarely filter related IMO.

True, it wouldn't be if the engine has a positive displacement oil pump, and the pump would have to be totally shot to not provide enough oil volume to the oiling circuit.

KC, I was under the impression your WJ had a running tick as well with the way you described it.. I just assumed mine was a little more picky than yours. I guess mine is very picky.

I sure hope my oil pump isn't what is going out the door. Heck my Jeep was quieter on start up ( and with its running tick/ just being noisy) with the Fram TG. The change in noise with different filters tell me its filter related.

Plus my Jeep had the running tick about a year prior to me having a mechanic replace the RMS. I would like to think he would have noticed some sort of excessive damage? *I also had him check out the pistons since at the time I was worried the noise was a torn piston skirt.. either way those sound much worse than what I am dealing with.
