Mom bought a 2011 Durango.

I talked to my mom this morning. She decided her 2009 Dodge Nitro was too small to haul her 4 grandkids around,so she bought a new Durango.

This was totally out of the blue. The only vehicle related talk I've heard from her lately is how she hated the 15mpg the 4.0 liter engine in the Nitro got.

Now she has an AWD Durango with the 13mpg (city) 5.7 liter Hemi.

My mom drives me crazy. She never does any research,always buys the first car she test drives,and I guarantee she overpays every time.

Truth.
I am shocked they still make stuff like this.
People I work with talk about $200 to fill a gas tank on a truck they drive to work.. How can anyone justify that?? I'd be unloading it at any chance I could get.

congrats to her. I had an 05 Hemi Durango and absolutely loved it. that Hemi has torque pretty high up the rev range - not like a lotta motors that give out early.

when I started commuting 100+ miles per day I ditched it for somethin that gets 40 mpg. gas prices will never go down to a point again where limitless consumption is affordable to the masses

Doesn't her hemi have the multi displacement set up? I've seen bigger SUVs than my Nitro that gets better mileage. Also, I don't know how she's driving if she was only getting 15mpg out of hers.

If you (or any of you) get the chance to break open and examine a current production "Hemi" you will quickly find that it does not possess hemispherical heads. So today's Hemi's are not really Hemi's. They are related, but in truth, no. It's hard to describe what they look like. It's like a cross between a pentaroof and a hemispherical chamber.

Main reason is cost and ease of implementation of valve actuation technologies.

It's not a bad engine. It's just that I don't believe Hemi fits it.

Exactly! Dodge owns the name. It has a stigma associated with it.

Yep, I'm the latter of the two.

I should add that I seriously like the looks of the new Durango. I think they did a fantastic job with it. I'd take the 3.6L myself. 16/22 with the Pentastar is pretty reasonable for a V-6 with close to 300 horsepower in a large SUV.

I guess if you can impulse buy new SUV's, putting gas into it isn't going to dent the bank account much!

Isn't buying big gas guzzling vehicles on credit the American way?

In the last three years,there has been exactly one occasion where she had all four grandkids at the same time.

My friend has a Charger RT and brother Challenger RT
Both get over 25 mpg highway. As my friend says, had a [censored] V6 Solara and it did worse on gas, now have a car that hauls [censored] and it get better mileage. He has 64K miles, lifetime warranty since he bough an 2008 Charger.

I believe the Ram gets 20 mpg highway. I believe the AWD Hemi gets 20 mpg highway.
