Moly additive for 4x4 tranny

I posted this on another forum (TacomaWorld) but didn't get an answer, other than warranty issues as it is a new vehicle. So I thought I'd give this a try here.

I've used moly additives in my manual transmissions for years. I found a moly additive (MolySlip) that makes shifting "butter" smooth. However since this is my first foray into 4x4's is moly ok for this application? I assume that the transmission isn't that different than a 4x2 before the output to the axles.

Also can this be used in a diff...mine are open diffs (ie:09 Tacoma, 2.7L 4 cyl, 4x4).

I found just the opposite to be true when I tried a moly additive in a toyota (85 4x4) transmission. It made shifting more notchy.

you'd be better off with a manual transmission specific lube like amsoil or redline sells.

Wow! That's the first time I've ever heard that. I've used this in several manual transmissions and have "always" found it to noticeably improve the gear shift action and selection!

I'll probably not add this until a fluid change anyways...the truck is only a couple months old. Unfortuneatly, I can't get RedLine in Calgary. Amsoil is available but will look to alternates for pricing and comparison.

I would recommend against the use of Moly additives since they tend to interfere with the friction modifier in the mtl's.

I just read about mtl's and the effect of friction in relation to syncro gears in the manual transmission. Interesting read and yes it does say that slipperness in the application isn't a desired result...guess that's what tom slick noticed when he added moly to his transmission.

In the second part of my question would this (friction modifier) still be relavent to my open diff's? Does slipperness help or hinder here?

Moly is used in differentials as EP agents, not friction modifiers. You don't necessarily need moly in a diffy with the new EP compounds, but if you prefer moly in a diffy fluid, Scheaffer's has one.

If you are referring to slipperiness for ease of shifting (as in shifter fork movement), you have to rely on the proper fluid viscosity for that. For synchro engagement, you need the proper friction modification compound.

I've read you link which explains why and what the different lube(s) for my Transmission and transfer case as opposed to my diffs on the Amsoil site. If I can find Scheaffer here in Calgary I'll check them out also!

Now when I change my transmission and gear lubes I'll know what to use!
