I have an om606.962 that came from a W210. If I'm not mistaken, MB recommends a 229.51-spec oil for this application, which is what I've stuck to in the past. This is an indirect-injected turbocharged diesel with a compression ratio of 21.5:1.

More recently the engine has since been relieved of its emissions equipment, and improved fuel supply means soot is a much greater concern than it used to be. Should I be prefering HDEO now? Something with more detergents and dispersants? I'm an EO novice so I'd appreciate any recommendations for reduced wear, especially due to soot or related concerns. 0W40 options highly preferred as the car runs year-round in the Canadian prairies.

What parts fell off? EGR?

Is removing emissions controls on diesels legal in Canada?
I have no idea. It seems to be pretty common.

The engine was swapped into an older vehicle with just a pipe and a muffler behind the turbo. The EGR did fall off in all the buzz.
0w40 Delvac, Duron or T6.
Soot will be reduced drastically with an EGR delete.
Thanks, I will look at those. I hope soot is reduced in the crank case. There's no shortage of it out the tailpipe if I'm not careful. Still working on tuning that out as much as possible.

Like @userfriendly says, The EGR falling off will DECREASE the soot that contaminates the oil. There are several options from Mobil for example that meet that approval like 5w-30 ESP, 5w-40 FS, 0w-40 FS etc.

I copy that I'll have less soot coming from the EGR, I'm just worried about the soot I'm generating in the cylinder. I have been using Mobil 1 European formula, but its safety data sheet doesn't mention calcium, which got me wondering if a HD oil might better suit my application.

Do you know what your oil drain intervals are? 229.51 spec'd oils are good for thousands of miles.

@clarknova where abouts are you? Depending on where you are, Federated Co-op makes some great products, such as 5w and 10w30 semi synthetics, group 4 based 0w40 and what used to be a group 4 based 5w40.

PetroCan has bulk dealers strewn about and as mentioned, make great products in all sorts of grades.

Klondike is available through the UFA. I forget who blends for them but years ago they were said to be great oils.

As for the emissions legalities.... while technically illegal, there is no emissions testing on the three prairie provinces and from my understanding, it's not enforced at any level.
