The reason I say it's a long shot is because if there was a significant degree of misalignment, combustion gasses from blow-by would be getting into the crankcase, likely causing issues with the oil (discolouration/contamination) and also forcing oil out through the crank case ventilation valve. None of that is happening. In addition to that, compression is excellent at 150 psi.

If there is a ring issue, I'm thinking it might be an upside down oil ring.

So far, consumption with the Castrol has been minimal. However, the machine still needs a heavy work out for an hour or two for me to get a more accurate assessment.

We need some serious snow.

Yep, my machine still has the mower deck on it...not worth changing out for the blade or blower until we get more than a few flakes.

My new 342cc kool bore has used no oil. There is only 10 hours but it has not moved a drop. Mobil 1 5w30 HM SL. I always let mine warm up while i drink coffee. I will post again at 25 hours.

I always start my machine and let it idle for while as I clear snow from the stairs and around the garage door. I usually then increase idle speed for another minute or two before putting the machine to work. The process usually takes 5 to ten minutes to warm the engine up.

I just checked the oil on the engine and it still appears to be consuming it but not at the same rate. From what I can tell it's using it at what appears to be half the rate. However, consumption is still happening. I'd say it's just the nature of the engine. I'll be keeping an eye on it to see if it changes.

Hey Morrison
Just picked up on this thread-your previous reference to aluminum bore firearms and decreased useful life is not that far off-my Remington 7400 semi auto 30.06 has an expected useful life of around 600 before rounds jamming become an issue-why? cause that is all these hunting rifles will typicaly see before the owner moves onto the next best thing. You typically do not plink with a 30.06 unless your shoulder is made of iron-hiting a can with a 30.06 is no more fun than hitting it with a .22, plus you loose the can from the impact of the larger round. So yes, it has spread to firearms

9 pages for a non issue?

The engine runs fine right? Change the oil and plug once a season and call it good. This really is a non issue. We tend to over think things and sweat the small stuff.

Agreed.

However, if you look at the pic of the spark plug in the first post, you'll see some serious fouling. A subsequent picture of the same plug, with the engine using conventional oil, will show no fouling.

It appears the engine prefers conventional oil. That may be useful information for others who may have a similar experience with synthetic oil in this type of engine.
