Someone told me once that Mobil Clean 5000 had a particular ingredient within in that could potentially compromise engine seals? Have any of you heard of this, or know what he could be talking about? And could this be true of any other brands of conventional oils out there?

Well, I think you are getting the term engine seal and what types of oil causes leaks mixed up. An engine seal could only be compromised when you use synthetic too early and not conventional, in general. Do you have a high mileage vehicle or something because maybe it was referring to using Mobil 5000 on older cars -pre ILSAC GF4 perhaps even pre SM?? You know, old school technology? As far as a conventional oil affecting seals, it's like Mark twain -style, 'the two shall never meet' kinda thing. Are you sure they were talking about Mobil 5000 and not Mobil 1 which is synthetic and I've followed religiously the rule that never put full group III, IV, V in an engine newer then 20 thousand miles and I still haven't touched Full Synthetic (GRP III, ...) in my car and I'm at a little over 26k now?

All I can tell you is that Honda V6s take real well to liquid engineering. I don't know if it's the parts they use (more malleable surfaces etc or its some lightweight material) but I can tell you that's its geared and made well for 5w20 oil even though in the previous year to mine, I belive they were using 5w30.( I am referring to 2005 and older Accords)
If Mobil 5000 then perhaps it was in the context of a older technology and oil (GF 3, SL etc) and not the newer vehicles that spec SM and ILSAC GF4. ?

And if by engine seal you mean the ones that cause leaks. Because of anything else besides the engine seals is swelling, that's a good thing according to me because my car is performing all the better as I hope I have not reached the pinnacle with Motorcraft. What do you all think? Beating Supra engines, S200s and Eagle Talons and getting 25 mog?? I can tell you that as of last week, I hit 26000 miles but on my current OCI, I am at 4000+ miles on MC after using nothing but:

Mobil 5000 (broke in; first oil change)
Mobil 7500 (2 cycles; completed at 21,634 miles)
Motorcraft (current and 'ironically' best performer?)
ohh, what cracks me up is that even though its marketed as syn blend, its priced like a conventional. a big 'heh' in caps goes here.

And I am using nil oil on my current OCI and I am like at 4300 miles on current OCI so that's pretty good. The Mobil 5000 and 75ks only used about a hlaf qt per OCI so if that's what you mean then wouldn't I would be losing oil now, on my current cycle? But I am not.

I think we need more information as to if you were really meaning M1, mobils synthetic brother.

You see

Mobil 5000=conventional
M1=synthetic ('synthetics', in general; known arguably to cause leaks when used to early..

If I was a betting man, I would say what you heard was probably in reference to perhaps an older year vehicle who tried to use it or maybe even in terms of a used oil analysis report or reference of that maybe said something to that affect (if taken to the extreme-kinda used oil analysis thing)

hope that helps..

From what I have picked up on this forum there was a problem with early synthetics and engine seals, but they have been resolved. It was something to do with the PAO base oils, but additives have corrected the problem.

The main reason that syntetics "cause" leaks is beacause they clean better and often uncover leaks that were hidden while running conventional. Quite a few new cars come from the factory with synthetic oil.

It is possible, I guess, for Mobil Clean 5000 to contain enough detergents to open clogged leak paths. It might be like a High Mileage oil without seal conditioners?

I'm just speculating...no gospel here.

Anyone have a recent UOA of Mobil Clean 5000 they could provide? I was talking about conventional and not synthetic. Anyone?

There's one floating around. It showed high sodium as an additive (250 ppm) which could mask detecting a coolant leak. What would be the advantage of adding sodium to motor oil?

Sodium Shmodium!!! I could care less if XOM uses it as an additive in some form in their conventional oil. I doubt a multibillion/trillin dollar company is going to produce a product that wasn't good for your engine. For most people this sodium thing is a non issue. Further more, that used oil analysis you showed was two years old (sheesh!!!) I'm sure that someone out there is sitting on a used oil analysis of Mobil Clean 5000 of recent. Anyone?

That's right. Put all your trust in the multi billion dollar company. Thats why this site was formed, wasn't it?

My point is, that most all the oil companies are multi $$$$$$ dollar companies, and I doubt ANY of them put out a bad product. Truth be know, I would trust my engine to ANY brand of motor oil there depending on the condition of the motor and the oil type that would best suit that engine.

Simply, does anyone have any used oil analysis now or in the near future to share regarding Mobil Clean 5000?

Are we just a little testy today?

Nope

I'm not upset/testy in the least. Heck, I wasn't even upset by the comment made obove. Simply trying to get an answer to my question. Once I weed through all the non-answers, I'm sure someone will provide what I'm looking for.
I'll ask again. Anyone sitting on a used oil analysis of Mobil Clean 5000 and/or have an upcoming used oil analysis to provide on this product?
Anyone have success with this product?

No kidding. Mobil 5000 is a seriously tough oil that is ILSAC-GF4 approved and is backed by Mobil.

Who cares about sodium, leave it to the chemists. You know how much salt you get in every french fry? You know it's not good for you but did you know it's a great cleaner..great for teeth. Yes, that's right...brush your teeth with toothpaste but follow it up by using your finger or brush with some salt and scrub. You will feel the burn, literally and your teeth will be a lot cleaner and you will feel it too and the same logic and science applies to metal engine components when it comes to cleaning. Sodium Fodium. Besides Hondas come with EM speced from factory so you bet I am using the same oil as FF to break in my engine. Who cres about sodium, leaks (pre-existing) etc in terms of what you can say about Mobil 5000, leave it to a current UOA. For me, it was the least I can do to break in my engine. Besides, I have pulled ofd a coup in how I followed up my 3 cycles of Mobil conventional. Lets keep the controversy where it's at and that is with M1.

That someone must've been referring to Mobil 1 because Mobil 5000 is just plain everyday boring dino - AKA Exxon Superflo; which is not going to hurt any seals what so ever.

I'm wondering if "they" were thinking of the proverbial older sludged up seal that gets cleaned and starts leaking. This is more often a result of an AutoRX cleaning or in some cases a synthetic cleaning an old seal that begins to leak after being cleaned. Mobil 5000 will not harm your seals at all. I believe your friend ( or whomever told you this) was thinking more along the lines of the above mentioned scenario and did not mean Mobil 5000 will harm your seals.

Maybe they are thinking of the Exxon Valdez, which hurt a lot of other types of seals!

LOL...
oh well, more non-answeres... here, I'll ask again:
Anyone sitting on a current UOA of Mobil Clean 5000 or one coming in the near future?
