Hi, first post here and this is a thing I have been thinking about for my next oil change. Car is a Audi MY06 with the 2.0 TFSI with DI and a turbo (Also tuned but not much)

Have not found much info about the Shell oil on the site, but it is a GTL oil while the Mobil 1 one is probably a Gr3 with PAO added. Here in Sweden the Shell is cheaper and a 0w oil, it can sometimes get as low as -25c here and up to 30c in the summer. The Mobil oil is a SP and has the BMW LL-04 cert while the Shell is SN with no BMW certs. Both do have the MB 229.52 cert with the LSPI test but i have read the SP test is a better one(?).

Both oils are probably more than fine but I just want to get the best for the car so it doesn't blow up on me and I just like having the better oil.

Sorry for any gramatical errors.

Imho, both oils are very comparable and can be used interchangeably. In NA that Shell oil is known as Pennzoil Platinum Euro LX, Quaker State Euro LX as well as Motomaster OEPlus European Premium. Pennzoil and Motomaster oils come made in Germany, QS is made in USA.
If I recall correctly, SP LSPI test was done on one engine only and engine wasn't prone to LSPI to begin with, I'd trust MB 229.52 more as the test was done on several LSPI suspect engines.

Welcome to BITOG. Being that you drive an Audi I would not be too concerned about the lack of BMW certs. Yes, Mercedes does have their own LSPI test but you don't have to worry about LSPI that with your '06 Audi.

Living in Sweden I would opt for the Shell 0w30 if you had to choose between the two simply because of the cold start performance but more importantly has Audi back spec'd your engine to VW 504/507 (Porsche C30)? What do the oil websites recommend in your country for your vehicle?

The LSPI test under SP(SN+) is performed on a modified Ford Ecoboost I4.

All it says in the owners manual is more or less "use a oil that meets the WV 504 spec" I have read that the 504/507 is a just a updated version of the older 504, could be wrong though and is more than happy to learn more!

Great, So 504 it is!

Automakers will update existing approvals to reflect new engines, performance requirements, etc.

It's a respectful difference, I think pumpability is about 10deg above pour point, e.g. -32C and -41C for those two oils.
okay, that's means if i were to go even more north for skiing or something with the Mobil 1 the engine would get like zero oil pressure. I'll for sure get the Shell just for that because i have friends like 4 hours straight north and they see -30c all the time

What???

Makes me think you're just pulling our leg in this whole thread.

if the pumpability is -32c and if i go somewhere it gets close to that it wouldn't be good, or am i wrong?

never mean to pull any legs, just if the pumpability is better on the shell i'd rather have that if i were to go more north?
i dont just use the car for going back and forth from work, has to work going everywhere.

The 504 of the certification is for gas vehicles and the 507 is for diesel. Much like 508/509 same oil can be used for both
Here there isn't really any gas or diesels oils, we all use the same oils in both.

VW 504.00: Gas
VW507.00: Diesel.
Those approvals have been interchangeable since 2004 and their introduction.

The oil pumpability (MRV) test is done at -40°C for 0W oils, and -35°C for 5W oils. Pour point has a poor correlation to actual pumpability, which is why the MRV test was introduced. It's possible for an oil have an excellent pour point and still fail the MRV test. Pour point can be considered obsolete.

A 5W is acceptable for use down to -35°C, with no real risk of oil starvation, but the engine would still be happier with a 0W even if it's not quite that cold. The engine will crank more easily, and oil pressure will rise more quickly.
