Is Mobil 1 good stuff again?

Tukeanu,
Welcome to the board. The verdict is still out on the newest Mobil-1 EP oils, but in my opinion the current Mobil-1 formulations are better than they ever have been. Especially for their price point. I think Mobil is trying to bring the price point up with their new formulas. However, if I were in your location looking for synthetic oil I would look at Esso XD-3. Seems like a great oil, and also at a great price.

Well I have a question then. Having done oil research elsewere prior to finding this site, others have badmouthed Mobil 1 because it is no longer 100% synthetic. I'm sure this has been discussed here ad nausium but I'm new so bear with me. I heard that Mobil 1 was the best stuff out there. Then along came Castrol (I think) and was advertising their synthetic blend product as "synthetic oil". Mobil took them to court, lost and then altered their formula to lower costs and make more $$$$$. Other oil researchers with whom I have been in contact with no longer even consider Mobil 1 when chosing synthetic products. Some of the 100% synthetics recommended were Delvac 1, Rotella T, Valvoline SynPower, Amsoil and a few others. I haven't even seen Valvoline SynPower mentioned on this site. Is this old info? Your facts are wrong on so many levels it is funny:

1) Castrol Syntec started as a Group IV PAO Synthetic and after several years Castrol reformulated it into a Group III Hydrocracked oil which is cheaper to produce.

2) Mobil filed an arbitration with the NAD division of the Better business bureau alleging that to continue to call the cheaper group III oil synthetic was misleading (as well as prohibited in Europe where group III is not considered a sythetic oil). The NAD found the Castrol adds were not misleading (search for the car & driver article that discusses this issue extensively).

3) Mobil continued to and does today, produce only group IV PAO oils as the base oil for Mobil 1. They only use the cheaper group III basestock in their blend and "mineral" oils.

4) Your other so called experts are recommending that you use oils that are Group III based like the Castrol. Perhaps they should spend a little time educating themselves.

tukeanu: Cary's pretty much got you on this one. Recommend you plow through some of the older threads here, and you'll get a pretty good overview of things. Look at the used oil analysis section (UOA), to see which oils really can do the job. Mobil is quite open about their general formulations (unlike Castrol). They have steadfastly continued to use primarily PAO as the backbone of their M1 products. There have been small doses of ester in past formulations, but now, it appears the products are rounded out with ANs (alkylated napthalenes), NOT G-III stuff.

This is a great site and you can learn a lot from it. Be sure to do your homework first, though, as you'll promptly be eaten alive, politely of course, if your info is incorrect or unsupportable. That said, welcome. Enjoy and learn.
