It simple marketing of "Good, Better and Best". NOS makes the same basic analogy with his dog reference.

For the most part, yes, the marketing of so many sub-brands is a train wreck of overcrowded shills effusively shouting superlatives.

Apart from market segmentation, there is another aspect. Some oils have auto manufacturer specific qualifications that either conflict, or would be too expensive to combine into one product. On the flip side you have High Mileage oils that cannot meet SN by the nature of their additives, and the big brands want to have the latest API on their primary products... thus the proliferation of variations begins.

The more I look at the synthetics side by side on pqia, the more I like the Mobil Super Synthetic.
