Mobil Super synthetic ?

Advance auto parts just sent out their monthly ads booklet and listed Mobil Super Synthetic @ 19.99 for 5 quarts with a driveworks filter. I'll upgrade the filter to a P1 for 2.00 more.
My question is.... what is the difference between the various Mobil 1 Synthetic oils and the Mobil Super Synthetic that is on sale at Advance?
Is it just marketing?

Mobil Super Synthetic is a lower quality synthetic compared to Mobil 1. If you go to the Mobil oil website it shows the difference between the 2.

Not a bad deal for the money, although "I" thought the Havoline deal they had before it was better.

For the record I use Mobil 1 exclusively in two of my vehicles.

IMO any Mobil 1, even the regular Mobil 1 5W30 SN GF-5, contains some PAO, to one degree or another. Almost certainly less PAO % than it used to be in Mobil 1 SM. Personally, I think that high concentration of quality PAO is beneficial for driving in Arctic conditions and when racing on the track; otherwise, go with some sort of dino: 1. conventional, 2. syn blend (advanced dino), 3. Group III synthetics (glorified dino). The most well known Group III synthetic in North America is Pennzoil Platinum 5W20, 5W30, 10W30. I believe at this time that Mobil Super Synthetic is comparable to Pennzoil Platinum and Quaker State Ultimate Durability. IMO Mobil Super Synthetic 5W30 is more desirable than Mobil 1 5W30, base oil wise and detergency wise. $20 for 5 qt of Group III synthetic is a very reasonable price. IMO if you are going to run a mainstream Mobil 1, go with Mobil 1 0W40 Euro Car Formula.

I have used Mobil Super 3000 FE 5w30 for several years and noted that the formulation has changed over the last few years.

Don't know when exactly but it also went from A1/B1 only to also meeting A5/B5 with this reformulation.

Have run Mobil Super 3000 in the Pathfinder, Ford Mondeo tdci, Volvo V50 2.0D and in a mates Honda CR-V Cdti.

Have no complaints as it well priced.

Thinking about it i probably have 100k of use of this oil over the last 5 years or so possibly more

All engines have been turbo diesels and have used little if any oil between oci. And the engines have showed no loss in performance or economy.

Actually my mate reported an slight improvement in economy with it, not sure what oil his Honda dealership put in previously.

Pity Costco don't stock it.

I save nearly £20 on 5litres of Mobil 1 0w40 but have to pay £24 for 5litres of Super, M1 being £60 at the same place.

The current formulation of MSS looks pretty good and it's probably as comparable to M1 as it is to Pennzoil Platinum and Quaker State Ultimate Durability.
M1 can't have much Grp IV or V at its price point and neither can any of the other oils.
A jug at $25.00 only buys you so much.
XOM is not run as a non-profit for the benefit of loyal M1 users.
You do get what you pay for.

Plenty of boron. There is a $7 rebate off 5 quarts at participating retailers. Last time I bought it, I got 10 quarts for less than $24

I just bought 5qts & DW filter for $19.99 and, I had a $5 GC to use. My total cost was $16.19.

The store Mgr didn't allow any upgrads to filters for $1 or $2 as the add didn't specify that as some others do! Meaning, it has to say..."Upgrade to a Classic for $1 or P1 for $2"...No worries!

I would have had to pay the price difference between the filters cost. IDK what the differences in cost were. I am thinking it's more than $1 or $2

I am going to try the DW filter and cut it open after my OCI!

Well it sound like they were sold out of the mobil super synthetic at the 3 Advance stores in my area...I'll see what tomorrow brings. Never thought that the oil was that popular here.

The MSS seems to be a great deal. The DW filters also appear to be constructed well. Any thoughts on the filter for at most, 5K mile oci.

Not so oil orientated people probably think they are getting Mobil 1, even though it clearly says otherwise.

I like the additive chemistry in Mobil Super 5000 and Mobil Super High Mileage. The only reason that Mobil Super Synthetic is different is Dexos. The bought an additive chemistry that was already Dexos approved rather than paying to test and certify the additive package in Mobil Super 5000.
