Here is my first report from my 2003 Jeep Liberty. There was 28,808 miles on her when I changed the oil. The oil was run for 4500 miles and was Mobile One 5w-30 EP.

I believe I ran this engine a little hard. I towed a 2000lb+ trailer for probably over 2500 of those miles. Had to push the engine a little to get her and the trailer up those moutain grades at 10,000 feet. Basically the only highway driving was with the trailer. A lot of lowspeed driving in 4 low, the type of driving that takes 6 hours to go 20 miles. And more city miles than I would like(need to get to work somehow). I also drove in some extremely dusty conditions where you could not see the vehicle 50 feet in front of you.

code:

EDWARD: We don't blame you for operating in dusty

conditions having an '03 Liberty, but even in that

environment, your silicon level is not high enough

to suggest much, if any, of that abrasive dirt is

getting past air filtration. Universal averages show

typical wear metals for an oil fromthis type of engine

after about 4,000 miles run on the oil. Your oil was

in use just longer, and we found all wear at around

average levels and in the correct balance to show

normal mechanical parts inside. No harmful

contamination present.

Try 5,000 miles next sample. Nice engine

I guess it is not too bad. I was expecting a little worst from the hard driving.

Man, the Mobil 1 EP 5w-30 analysese are rolling in! The stuff seems to maintain a high flashpoint and it gradually, lightly thickens instead of losing viscosity.

The 3.7 and 4.7 V8 are probably the best engines Chrysler has designed in a long time!! This UOA just proves what a well designed engine should look like from a UOA stand point!

These are excellent results, given the operating conditions. However you'll be able to reduce the upper end wear even more if you improve your air filtration. I'd also consider using a bypass filter setup if you do lots of off roading, to drop these silicon levels down and keep the dirt from circulating inside the engine.

I like the Mobil 1, EP a lot - I can see no reason to even consider the GF-4 rated product unless you are running service intervals < 5000 miles. It would be a lot less confusing if Mobil would simply have one Mobil 1 oil on the shelf. A GF-4 rated, EP version is what I have in mind.
