The last time I changed transmission fluid on my 95 PSD I needed the oil quick, so I went to Auto Zone and bought 22 quarts of Mobil I Synthetic transmission fluid. I am due to change it again in Oct. of this year and I am planning ahead. I do have a drain plug on the TC so the reason for 22 quarts.
Is Mobil I transmission fluid Full Synthetic?

I believe the Mobil1 is a full synthetic yes - it is one of the few around.

When I went to change my transmission fluid in my Tremec 5spd (takes Dexron ATF) I chose to go with Valvoline - turns out the Durablend is the highest quality ATF they make. I later found the ATF made by Mobil1 was full synthetic though.

I suspect you are in need of ATF?

Thanks for the replys. I was also looking at the Schaeffer specs. on the 204 and 204S. Now for the better of the two.

My unbiased 2 cents. I have used it for years and it appears to work very well. I read the specs and immediately came to the conclusion that it was a group III. I called Mobil and they indicated that it was a PAO. I have my doubts though. As I said though, I feel it is a good product.

Al, What transmission or transmissions have you used it in? I would like to use it in a new 4L60E on a 4.3 but I keep seeing posts by folks saying it made that transmission slip. Thanks for any help. RW

People in Impala circles have had both good and bad luck with synthetic ATFs in 4L60s. My recomendation is to stick with conventional ATF and put the biggest transmission cooler you can find in line with the factory tank mounted cooler. Heat is what kills transmission fluid and the closer you can keep the fluid to ideal (160F) the longer the fluid and the transmission will last.

I've been using Mobil 1 synthetic ATF in GM 4L60E (for about 5 years), Ford E40D (three years), Ford 4R70W (1.5 years) with no problems whatsoever in any of the transmissions.

The 4L60E is basically stock (except for shift kit and torque converter) and sits behind a stroker motor. The Mobil 1 ATF has served me well.

Bob,
One of the best transmission shops that rebuilds the E40D and newer Ford HD truck trans recommends Schaeffer's fluid. He warranties his trans. rebuilds for 2 years, whether drag racing, truck pulling ect. I am not sure if it is the 204 or the 204S that he recommends. Can you give me an idea as which one is best for my application, towing TT and GCVW about 15K. Trans guage never over 190 degrees, with cooler. Also are the pour points correct in that the 204S is not as low as the 204 and why. Also on a $250 order, it is cost competive to me as I use 20-22 qts per truck.

Dickwells: I have used it in a '92 and ''94 Chev corsica, also Nissan Sentra. (The '92 had syn in it for about 75K the trans on both these cars were about the only part of that did not fail. Corsica= Junk.

Best E40D shop -- I bet you are referring to BTS (Brian's Truck Shop). **** that guy must be good. Everybody raves about him.

Hopefully my E40D has many, many more miles to go before I even need to think about that.

You are correct, Brian's Truck Shop in Lead Hill, Arkansas, probably the top reputation in the Ford community in the US. I have never heard a bad comment, and people drive from all over the US to get their trans. repaired, or shipped if not driveable. I have not needed to use him yet, but he can bet it is money in the bank if mine ever breaks.
Now to get Bob on line to answer my question.

I cannot answer the question as to pourpoint differences but I'll give you a name and # of the chemist that can.

They had told me that they were not going to carry the 204 as the 204s was the better but in just calling the office they still do and evidently that was a rumor. I myself have been using and selling nothing but the 204s. I don't know of anyone using the standard 204. My personal recommendation is the 204s but then again, I'd say call that tran's shop and then tell me.

. I've never heard of him myself but I am interested in knowing more as I know of a lot of people that have the PSD's and I'm sure it will be just a matter of time before some one asks.

As you know, anytime anyone purchases a min order of 250.00 that the price gets very reasonable. It drops to wholesale price and also covers shipping so all the person is paying for is product. That's the only way I order(yes, I also have to order the same way as everyone else)

Bob,
I got an e-mail back from Brian's Truck Shop (BTS). I had asked which Schaeffer's he recommends and I'll para phrase his comments: "Schaeffer's 204s semi-synthetic" "Best stuff ever made" "Clutch Friendly" ect.

The weak spot in a Ford Power Stroke Diesel is the auto transmission, great engine by International, not so good trans by Ford. But with a good transmission fluid and following recommended changes, the trans can become a non-factor as far as predicted failure.

Bob, I will not have any trouble getting a $250 order, as I will need 4 cases of the transmission fluid to change 2 trucks, and make up the rest with some more 15W40 700 Series engine oil. I am going to change my 2001 PSD transmission fluid also with 2500 miles on it. I want to get the Ford factory fluid out and the 204s in it as soon as I can as I value BTS recommendation.

Hey Vetteman, Are you sure its 22 qts in a trans??? I just changed mine today and it was 16 qts, spot on. Yes I drained the Torque Converter, blew out the lines, installed a huge cooler (Tru Cool 29,000 lbs) I used mobile 1, seems to shift fine. Great actually

Mobile 1 is good trans fluid! Its only not good when you start adding horse power, the mobile 1 will start to "slip" in the trans. Thats why Brain says to use LE or Schaffer's it wont slip.

Sod dude

Sod dude,
You are correct, but I'm adding a quart for the inline full flow I installed, extra cooler and I flush about 6 quarts that gets wasted, to clean the lines, factory and Hayden cooler, ect. I know, it is over kill. So with what it takes, and what I waste, I use about 22 quarts.
