Hi everyone,

I was playing with the Mobil Comparison Tool, comparing the different oils, and I noticed something interesting. I had entered in the various 5w30 oils (Annual Protection, Extended Performance, High Mileage, and regular Mobil 1) and in the category of wear protection, Mobil lists three dots. Three dots means "Advanced", with the highest rating being four dots, which is "Ultimate".

What I think is interesting is that I entered in the 10w30 weights, and when it comes to wear protection, Mobil lists four dots, the "Ultimate" rating.

Now if the zinc/phos was higher I could understand that. But, what changes between the 5w30 and 10w30 oils? Mobil is saying that the 10w30 oils have better wear protection than their 5w30 oils.

I am trying to understand why. If it was from a 30 weight to a 40 weight, I could understand since the 40 weight has a thicker oil film. But, 5w30 to 10w30?

Is it because 10w30 has less VII, so, it won't sheer as much as a 5w30, therefore, provide more wear protection?

I am curious why Mobil would rank their 10w30 with the "Ultimate" rating, and their 5w30 with "Advanced".

Thoughts?

Hopefully this link works.

Perhaps they think it's got more oil in it, because they put it in the bottle.

Not surprised at all although I am surprised that they published it. GF-5 has a lower fuel efficiency standard for 10W than they do for 0/5W.

What I find interesting is Mobil doesn't list the HTHS on their conventional Super oils. A further obfuscation is density is listed for synthetics and SG for conventional. I gather they don't want to kill the Golden Goose.

Thanks,

I had done all 5w30 at first, since my brother and dad have vehicles calling for 5w30, like this:

Then, the 10w30 oils:
