Anyone know what the actual differences are between the Mobil 1 5w40 diesel oils? I'm talking about the Mobil delvac 1, Mobil delvac 1 ESP, and Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck. All in 5w40. I've looked at the data sheets but they all seem pretty much the same. I have heard that Mobil makes true synthetics, as in group 4, however I'm not seeing anything to show that on the data sheets. Unless I missed it of course, which is quite possible lol

Why buy fake, synthetic oil when you can buy natural, organically grown motor oil?

PAO aint all that Buddy, but it should be ~50% of any and all ILSAC GF5 M1 product basestock - and it ISNT.

ESP (Emissions System Protection) is for trucks with particulate filters, so you can cross that one off the list for your 2001 Cummins/Dodge.

Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck is the one that Mobil intends to be used in diesel-powered heavy duty pickups, but I think that RT6 is better, so I use that.

Delvac 1 is for heavy duty trucks and probably has higher content of Grp IV than Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck. Truckers run longer change intervals than you would ever dream of on D1.

Normally I would agree on the syn vs conventional but I will be using this oil in very low temps. That's why I want the syn.

Ok thanks. Just curious, why do you think RT6 is better? Other than its quite a bit cheaper of course.

All Mobil 1 oils have a blend of base stocks for better performance, which is far superior to conventional.

Mobil Delvac 1 ESP 5w-40 is a primarily PAO lubricant. However, that, and the difference between synthetic and "synthetic" and conventional doesn't mean much all on its own, without intended usage. Here, Delvac 1 ESP 5w-40 is ridiculously cheap, whereas Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck 5w-40 is double the price, thanks to retailers' stupidity and/or greed.

Delvac 1 5w40 is CI-4/CI-4+ that's not been prominent (if even available) for some years. Delvac 1 ESP 5w40 is a CJ-4 oil primarily intended for the heavy duty market, whereas Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck is for the light/medium duty market. There is some overlap between the two, though. D1 ESP is a better oil than Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck, but depending on your application, it won't matter. Don't confuse these oils with Mobil 1 ESP, for European light-duty vehicles.

CJ-4 oils are perfectly fine for use in pre-DPF trucks and tractors...that myth went away years ago.

Nothing on the data sheet will indicate what base stock is used.

If you want a high quality 5w40 diesel oil, pick whichever you want from Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck, Delvac 1 ESP, Rotella T6 or Chevron Delo.

What is your intended application? That will help the discussion along.

Imperial Oil had already done away with CI-4+ oils when I first bought the Delvac 1 ESP 5w-40 for the Audi years back. They took forever to bring out the SN/GF-5 Mobil 1 up here, but they got rid of all the CI-4+ and earlier specs in one heck of a hurry.

If you can find OLD CI-4/CI-4+ rated Turbo Diesel Truck, it's the same as the CI-4 Delvac 1. The new CJ-4 Delvac 1 ESP is still a good oil, but the older CI-4/+ started with a higher TBN (12), and takes longer to deplete the TBN when using ULSD. Not sure how much Grp. IV is in Delvac 1-but it definitely holds up better (less shearing) than T6.

The Delvac 1 5w-40 MSDS shows 20-30% PAO:

Quote:

1-DECENE, HOMOPOLYMER HYDROGENATED 68037-01-4 20 - < 30%

The Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck MSDS shows 10-20% PAO:

Quote:
1-DECENE, HOMOPOLYMER HYDROGENATED 68037-01-4 10 - < 20%

The Delvac 1 ESP 5w-40 MSDS also shows 10-20% PAO:

Quote:
1-DECENE, HOMOPOLYMER HYDROGENATED 68037-01-4 10 - < 20%

I'm using it in a 01 24v cummins with 251k....I don't do extended drain intervals. I want the syn particularly for the cold weather up here in Watertown, NY

I've been using Shell's T5 in some pretty wicked cold starts for two winter's now. No issues. Likely colder than your winters in NY. Can't beat the cost of it... I use an '06 Cummins.

When I switched from Premium Blue 15w40 to a synthetic 5w40, the first one I tried was Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck. I noticed a very significant increase in oil consumption, so I dumped it after ~6k miles and put in RT6. Oil consumption was much better on RT6. Other reasons I like it is it has slightly higher HTHS and significantly higher Viscosity Index than Mobil 1 Turbo Diesel Truck.
