Mobil 1 Vs. New Mobil 1 Extended Performance

Hello everyone.

I have not posted on this forum in almost a year. Now that another 10k has rolled by and its time to change my Mobil 1, I realized the industry has changed a bit. I noticed Besides the Mobil 1 Super Syn that I have been using, that there is a new, Guarenteed 15k Mobil 1 oil called Extended Performance Mobil 1.

I am guessing this EP Mobil 1 had a better extended drain result then the original Mobil 1? I would Love to extend my drains from the 10k I am doing with Mobil 1, to the 15k Guarenteed drains of the EP version. Is anyone using this? Can anyone explain to me what has been changed in the formula? Thanks.


P.S. The cars I am using the oil in are a 03 Cavalier 2.2 Ecotec and a 04 Ranger with the 4.0.

Regular M1 has been reformulated to meet SM/GF-4 specs. as required now and has reduce levels of ZDDP. The Mobil 1 Extended Performance looks much like the original SL you used, but claims to have more Super-Syn.

The jury is out and not enough data to say.

Based on the small price differential my comfort level would be on the Mobil 1 Extended Performance, whether it could live up to the 15K or not.

The new EP is NOT a SM/GF-4 approved oil. Some members have said that they are burning or losing more oil with this than they have with Mobil 1 SuperSyn.

...don't forget the Mobil 1 Extended Performance states that, if your car is under warranty, do NOT run it to 15K. They still recommend changing per owners manual.

Today's oil landscape seems to be in the so called "DESIGNER" specifications. Gone are the days that you could pick any oil and it will run just fine under almost any application.

Here is one using Mobil 1 as an example. I have a 15,000 miles recommended OCI with Mobil 1 5w30 also recommended by the OEM. However Mobil 1 Extended Performance does not meet the GM 4178M specification, which oxymoronically is specifically designed and guranteed to go 15,000 miles.

Seems to be RTFM and bobstheoilguy.com has enhanced worth in helping to wade through the plethora of oils on the market.

Yes, too much Zinc and Phosphorus.

In a year or so, I think we'll be back to one Mobil 1 with little ZDP and still long drain capable. They said they are working on this. ruking you makes some great points.

I have had good luck with Original M1 for the past 10 years.

Increased ZDDP (on a mechanically sound vehicle) can only mean a longer lasting Mobil 1, right?

I buy the 5qt. Jug of EP, and it only runs me $3 more then the original M1, its cheap insurance considering I do not do any tests of the oil.

I'm not really worried about the warrantee being void on these vehicles, both of them are within 10k of loosing there warrantee's and having to make a warrantee claim that would require a test of my oil had never happened to me before.

I think I will go with the strongest stuff they offer, right?

I think you'll find the TSO/ASL/ATM/AFL products will all meet the 800 ppm, GF-4 Phosphorus limit within a year, if they don't do so already....

They seem to be going the medium "SAPS" (sulphated ash,phosphorus,sulphur) route and using the ACEA "C3-04", Lubrizol sourced chemistry....

As for the above post, I'd run the EP stuff in everything ...the higher additive treat levels can only help.

If the EP stuff doesn't meet VW 502.00, I'll have to stay with the traditional Mobil 1 for the remaining 6 years of my powertrain warranty.
