I have 2 cases of Mobil trisynthetic 0w30 that is 4 or 5 years old. Is this a decent oil? I have read that SS is a better product. How do you think the 0w30 trisyn would do in my wifes 01 Accord 4 cyl. that calls for 5w20. What would be a good OCI for this combo.
Also which dino 5w20 has the best cold start specs and how does dino 5w20 compare to Mobil 1 5w30 for cold start protection?
Ps: I tried to use the search feature but didn't have any luck.

Any unopened bottle of Mobil 1 Tri-Synthtic 0w30 will work very well for you. Mobil 1 Tri-Synthetic far exceeds the ILSAC GF-2 and API SJ requirements from that time. I believe that the old Mobil 1 Tri-Synthetic is as good as or better than just about any "dino" ILSAC GF-4 oil produced today. I suggest that you change your Tri-Synthetic every 7,500 miles or six months and you will still have a good safety margin.

I am not sure which 5W-20 motor oil has the best specs for cold weather but I think any ILSAC GF-4 5W-20 motor oil will give you very good cold weather performance unless you live near the arctic circle.

I believe Mobil 1 5w30 will give better cold weather performance than any "dino" 5W-20 motor oil. The pour point depressants used in conventional "dino" motor oils degrade fairly quickly and since Mobil 1 is a group IV oil it contains no pour point depressants.

Sin City: Thanks for your reply. That's what I thought. By the way Sin City is the name of a "Gentlemen's Club" near where I work in the South Bronx, NYC. ( I've never been to the place but I hear the younger guys talking yada,yada,yada...)

The only oil engine related failure I have had is using trisynthetic molile one,a fram filter and 9000 mi on the oci. I can not pinpoint the problem but I suspect the oil. Mobil only had this type of mobil1 out for a short time before they improved it to the ss. I would not use it. Mike

At one time Mobil had the shelf life of Mobil 1 listed on their web site as 120 months which is 10 years. I would feel safe using a synthetic motor oil up to about seven years after it was produced if it was in a sealed container.
