I went out to Advance Auto to pick up some oil change supplies which included a new Mobil 1 oil filter. The correct part for my Subaru Forester is the M1-108 which is now designated as "extended performance." I always open the boxes in the store to make sure I'm buying the correct, unused part. I noticed something strange after opening two boxes. It appears that there has been a design change for this filter that you should be able to see in the pictures I attached. One has the spring on the bottom like I have seen in the past, and the other one has a blue cap at the bottom. I bought both to take pictures and will probably return one or both as I'm not sure what is going on with these filters. Anyone here use the mobil 1 filters and can chime in on which one is the one they use? Can anyone advise me on what is the function of the blue cap? Which filter would you use? I noticed the change in the bypass valve as well. Apparently the bypass valve spring is now on the other side of the dome-end plate I don't see any problem with the new design, but am not curious enough right now to cut one of these apart to check it out. I'm sure the new ones will do just as well as the ones you have been using.

To answer your questions better, the "blue cap" is the end of a simple pressure release valve that many filters have to allow oil to bypass the filter media in any situation when it cannot pass through the media fast enough to maintain full flow to the engine. The valve may be needed in several engine conditions: First, it can keep from blowing the filter apart should the right conditions (or should I say wrong conditions!) cause too much resistance for the oil to flow adequately through the filter. Second, in the unlikely event your engine should completely pack the filter with dirt and sludge, the valve should open to maintain flow to the engine (rather than starve the engine completely for oil pressure.) Lastly, when starting the engine cold, like on a below freezing day, sometimes the oil is too thick to pass through the filter media fast enough, so the bypass valve can open up varying amounts to allow enough flow until the oil warms up.

I'm sure others here could explain it better, but that's how I see it currently.

This is what the blue button looks like and how the filter is constructed in this thread.

Subaru filter cut open

You can see how it works.

I prefer the blue button type of bypass over the clicker style of the older champ filters.

Never had a problem with the old style, but after cutting open every filter I've changed for over 30 years, the new blue ones seem that they would work better.

I will not pay the cost for the Mobil 1 filters when the $2.46 supertech does the same job in my apps.

That must be nice. This last weekend I was in my local Wal-Mart and all of their supertech filters were close to $3 each. At that price, I'll buy Motorcraft every time. (Ah, I remember the good old days when supertech filters were under $2 each) sigh

Motorcraft does not make filters for most of the engines that I service... Or atleast Wal-mart does not carry them.

I believe that the blue bottom is the alternative to the clicker. I also believe that all the rest are Ecore filters and they have the combo bypass ADBV. Those with the blue button are not Ecores.

Actually, I have some of the M108 and M110, short and long respectivley, and some have the blue "button" and some have the visible coiled spring on the dome end holding pressure against the bypass valve. I don't think that either of these is the famous Champ 'clicker'. I think that the blue is just a plastic valve with the spring on the other side of the end plate instead. This is confirmed by Bill in Utah's picture of inside of a ST6607.

I guess if you want the old spring type, then you could pay two bucks more for the K&N equivalent. I noticed at my auto parts store that the K&N still has the old spring style while all the M1 have gone to the blue cap. Nissan VQ uses the same filter as your Subie, but I always grab the 110 version. Same change in both.
