Two points of interest:

1. Mobil Super 5K is thicker than Mobil Super 5K HM
2. Mobil 1 HM 5W-30 is thicker than Mobil Super 5K 10W-30 and Mobil Super 5K HM 10W-30

Perhaps a design choice to compensate for the probable increased shear of a 5 weight base vs a 10 weight base in longer term OCI? Would have to sift thru the UOA forum to see how the viscosity changes over OCI ranges.

Almost all 5w30's are thicker than 10w30's. I always wonder why people think "10 is a bigger number so its thicker!". Look at mobil 1 5w30 its 11cst at temp and their 10w30 is like 10.7cst

Yes but even the regular Super 5W30 is thicker than 10W30. More often than not 5W30's are thicker than 10W30's.

You'd be better off looking at HTHS instead of kinematic viscosity to judge "thickness". In that regard most standard 10w30's are indeed marginally thicker than your average 5w30, typically 3.1 HTHS vs 3.0 for a 5w30.

Many "thicker" 5w30's available though, Mobil 1 HM is one of them with an HTHS of 3.3 IIRC.
