Mobil 1 High Mileage not Ford Approved?

I installed in a 98 Grand Marquis with 150K miles. I'm sure its fine but it don't have Fords WSS-M2C945-A seal on it. 5W20.

The engine was losing a bit of oil, maybe a qt every 2.5Kish. I asked ford and they said they have yr old 4.6L vans with that loss. Prior was motorcraft 5W20 with 5K oci for the last 15K. Had history of maintenance with unknown oil. Engine looks spotless clean from the oil cap. I can see the head texture.

Is that oil spec for API SL? Might be why Mobil isn't bothering to list it?

Anyways, a lot of these mod motors (modular V8) have issues with valve stem seals. The early ones especially, but my '96 needed valve stem seals done at about 80,000 miles very badly, I was going through more oil that you! Might be something to look into as its not terribly hard and makes a good Saturday project.

Very familiar with that, did it on a 95 Thunderbird. Now it don't use oil. From what I understand though the problem was remedied in 96. The ones I took out were as brittle as plastic.

It is a bigger job though on a crown vic, the A/C evap box has to go as well as the booster. Wish I did them when I had the intake off. I would prob pull the intake again.

Mobil 1 High Mileage 5W-20 synthetic motor oil meets or exceeds the requirements of:
ACEA A1/B1
API SL

Mobil 1 5W-20 synthetic motor oil meets or exceeds the requirements of:
API SN, SM, SL, SJ
ILSAC GF-5
Ford WSS-M2C945-A

Mobil 1 High Mileage is too good for mfr specs. Use it if you want and don't worry.

The other option is to use Mobil 1 5w30 or 0w30.

I have Mobil 1 5w30 HM in my '98 Grand Marquis, could care less whether it's Ford approved or not...

Mine only has 69K mi but has been a "in towner" probably 95% it's life(though it's out on a 500 mi road trip today)... It's consumption had increased from around 5K mi qt at 33K mi(mileage when I bought it)to 2.5K, the HM appears to have gotten it back to approx where it was orig... I'll see how level looks when it's back here tomorrow, at that point it'll have 4400mi on it's OC...

I repl valve stem seals on a '92 MGM, didn't require evap housing removal... Still I said never again, if it uses oil, it uses oil...

Actually the dealer suggested Mobil 1 High Mileage when I questioned what they do for cars with higher OC. That is why I'm surprised it don't have Ford approval(which probably don't mean anything anyway).

They said they would be glad to do the HM synthetic OC for $89.99. "Would you like me to make an appointment for you, sir?"

When I installed that oil it seems to be a bit thicker than regular 5W20. It don't have any energy saving ratings either.

They also said qt/2.5K would not even be checked under any Ford Warranty.

Keep in mind that when your Mercury was new, Ford's spec was basically an SJ oil. SL's performance is superior.

As I understand Mobil 1 High Mileage's SL rating, it is simply because it contains too much phosphorous to meet SM or SN standards. Phosphorous is a good thing for wear, but can poison catalysts, hence the lowered standards for that additive in SM/SN.

I wouldn't worry about meeting Ford specs on your Marquis. Mobil 1 High Mileage will do a fine job, use with no hesitation.

LOL -- At 100*C the std Mobil 1 5w20 is slightly thicker than the HM, 8.9 cSt vs 8.6 cSt for the HM... At 40*C the HM M1 has a 50.1 cSt vs 49.8 for std flavor(or immeasurable without a lab)...

Why would you care, you don't have a warranty to worry about.
