excerpt from Mobil 1's web page below. notice how it says "...including PAOs" and is very deliberate in not stating "100% PAO basestock". does anyone know how much PAO is really in this stuff? I'll bet it's a PAO/III blend. and why not? EM is a business, and if 95% of consumers don't know any better (and the law lets them)...

"Is Mobil 1 with SuperSyn Technology a fully synthetic motor oil?

Yes, it is. To meet the demanding requirements of today's specifications (and our customers' expectations), Mobil 1 with SuperSyn uses high-performance fluids, including polyalphaolefins (PAOs), along with a proprietary system of additives..."

Mobil 1 is and has always been a fully PAO product. The additive package carrier fluid is not PAO, but it isn't for any PAO/Ester based synthetic oil. Mobil 1 IS NOT a PAO/Group III blend. Maybe the other component is slight bit of ester for seal swell.

I asked Mobil if Mobil 1 contained any Grp III and their response was "Absolutely NOT!! Mobil 1 is Group IV and V only!!"

They must get asked this alot. LOL. AN's are the other synthetic basestock being used other then PAO.

well, I am glad to hear this. I think Mobil should do a better job marketing their product. I'm not an oil expert, but just from reading around on this site I'm probably more informed than 90% of the oil buying public and I still couldn't decipher any real difference between Mobil 1 and the group III crowd based on their marketing claims (thanks, Castrol). Like orange juice, they should clearly advertise "not from conventional oil" or something similar.

but I must say, I'm still not sold on M1. it seems that GIII oils are just as good but are 1/2 the cost.

I've got Super Tech Full Synthetic in my '99 Maxima now, and will get a used oil analysis at 4k - that will determine whether or not I switch to M1.

BTW - "Group V" can include any synthesized base oil other than PAO. This would include esters or alkylated naphthalene. I've even heard of disastrous efforts to use polyalkylene glycol (PAG) in motor oil.

ExxonMobil is still one of the largest makers of ester base oils in the world, and they still use it in several of their products.

Sky Jumper when is the last time a GIII oil guranteed a 15,000 or 1 year oil change interval! I would call that a serious performance difference!

JohnBrowning, the 15k miles is a marketing claim. I have absolutely no doubts that a GIII oils could perform to the same standards over a mere 15k mile interval. Nobody has yet chosen to market them that way though.

BTW, M1 is over $40 for 5 quarts now locally. Insane!

If you made up a motor oil that was 80% PAO base stock and 20% additives and blend stocks, it would be 80% PAO.

All the Mobil 1 motor oils are more than 51% PAO. The specific formula also contains additives, esters, alkylated benzenes, and VI improvers depending on the application. For example, the 20W-50 motorcycle contains no VI improver and different detergents than, say, the SUV formula.

There is also a trace of carrier oil from additives.

No Mobil 1 motor oil uses Group III base stocks.

the 15k gurantee is for the EP, not the regular SS, which the above excerpt is from. and anyway, having the EP line makes one think the regular SS is some detuned (e.g. GIII) blend - especially since it's at the same price point as other GIIIs. Mickey - you know a lot about Mobil 1 - but 98% of consumers do not. and if EXM changes the formulation to GIII (like Castrol did), how will anyone know since they can legally do it without telling you?

my point is this - I think it would be very valuable if M1 found a way to communicate their superior formulation so as to clearly set them apart from GIII oils - if the base stocks come only from GIV and GV, then say so! otherwise I'm going to assume shady marketing (ahem, Castrol). tell us how much PAO is in there (like 100% agave Tequila, for instance) and no informed consumer will pay $5/qt for syntec or synpower or any other GIII - but they might pay $3. I think Castrol, Valvoline, and Texaco are getting rich off EXM's poor marketing. EXM, are you listening???
