I just replaced my Motorcraft oil filter w/ a Mobil 1 Extended Performance oil filter. I am now noticing very loud knock/crank noise on cold start up. I do not believe the Mobil 1 filter`s antidrain back valve is sufficient.A lot of money for a filter that does not work correctly.This in a 1998 Grand M.66k miles.

Save your $$$ and just buy a Purolator Premium Plus for $2.49, no need to spend $11 on an oil filter.

Champions ADBVs are generally good, especially on a GM engine. Could there be other factors in the change? Weather, oil, conditions, ect.

The 2.8/3.1/3.4s always had a slight valetrain noise. I've noticed it get louder with different filters, especially Frams. I'd go to a different filter and see if it gets better. The M1 is overpriced IMO anyway.

The car has had an exceptional service record. had been running 5w30 motorcraft w/ motorcraft filter w/ no noise on start up.Currently running 5w30 Amsoil. I had heard of similar problems w/ the 4.6 w/ mobil filter. Bad knocking for the first few seconds at cranking,couldn`t be good.

I've used the Mobil 1s for years and not noticed any issues with the ADBV or the flow rates that some are uneasy with. The used oil analysis I've posted on several vehicles, usually with Mobil 1 filters, show outstanding performance. The Mobil 1 ADBV is made of the the higher quality silicone material, versus the nitrile rubber, so who knows, but I doubt it's a problem with the ADBV generally. That said, perhaps you got a bad one. Switch around while keeping the same oil to minimize the number of factors changed at the same time. If another design works better on your car, then obviously go with it.

Call up Mobil/Champs and see what they say. Maybe they'll offer some type of refund.

I have used Mobil 1 filters three different times on my VW. I've had nothing but GOOD experiences with them. I wonder why your Grand M. doesn't get along with the Mobil 1.

I would also add that while using Mobil 1 filters, I've done UOA with particle counts that indicated that my old, heavily used oil was still considered clean by hydraulic fluid standards. In all candor, I have not done comparative testing with other filters, so I can't for sure give the Mobil 1 credit for this result (maybe my engines are just clean by nature), but this is nevertheless another factor weighing heavily in favor of the Mobil 1.

Hempulator, I had the same problem as you. I was using M1-210 oil filter with Mobil 1 5w30, and would hear the ticking on start up on very cold days. Decembers and Januarys.
I changed to the motorcraft FL-820S oil filter. Same oil.
No more loud ticking on cold start up in the dead of winter anymore.
I would only use the Mobil oil filters in summer.

On the 4.6 engines I own the only filters they seem to like are the MC's or the Purolators. Feed em a Wix and they start crying. Chunk em a Champion made filter and it's ticky ticky tavvy. No problems with Fram, I just don't like them.
