I paid a visit to my local PepBoys today in search of a filter for my car (09 G8 GT) and compared Mobil 1 Extended Performance, Royal Purple, and PureOne; all nice filters.
I've notice that the Royal Purple and Mobil 1 are physically identical. Are they both made by the same manufacturer? I remember reading somewhere that the M1's are made by Champion Labs.
Keep in mind that I only eye-balled them, but I did have them side to side. They were twins down to the etching (a double 'Z') on the base/flange. Looking through the flange the pattern of the center tubes were identical and the springs were as well. The only difference that I could spot were obviously the colors, the ADBV did looked slightly different (aside from the color) and of course I couldn't say anything about the filter media itself, which I presume is the real difference between the 2 brands (aside from the $2 price disparity). Royal Purple's media is 100% synthetic while M1 is a natural and synthetic blend according to their respective literature.
The M1 was priced at $12.99 while the RP was $14.99. Can anyone justify the RP over the M1? I know it's a measly 2 bucks, but we're already talking about a lot of money comparative to the wide variety of $3-$4 filters.
