Mobil 1 filter vs Royal Purple, any difference?

I paid a visit to my local PepBoys today in search of a filter for my car (09 G8 GT) and compared Mobil 1 Extended Performance, Royal Purple, and PureOne; all nice filters.

I've notice that the Royal Purple and Mobil 1 are physically identical. Are they both made by the same manufacturer? I remember reading somewhere that the M1's are made by Champion Labs.

Keep in mind that I only eye-balled them, but I did have them side to side. They were twins down to the etching (a double 'Z') on the base/flange. Looking through the flange the pattern of the center tubes were identical and the springs were as well. The only difference that I could spot were obviously the colors, the ADBV did looked slightly different (aside from the color) and of course I couldn't say anything about the filter media itself, which I presume is the real difference between the 2 brands (aside from the $2 price disparity). Royal Purple's media is 100% synthetic while M1 is a natural and synthetic blend according to their respective literature.

The M1 was priced at $12.99 while the RP was $14.99. Can anyone justify the RP over the M1? I know it's a measly 2 bucks, but we're already talking about a lot of money comparative to the wide variety of $3-$4 filters.

Heck I cant figure out how to justify either when I can buy 2 P1 or bosches. I'm obviously no help

I think you essentially answered your own question. From a "skeletal" perspective, they are virtually identical Champ Labs products. Both will serve you well. As for the differences in the filtration media, well, time for you to do some homework. Personally, I'd be happy to use either one.

I believe RP uses a glass media filter similar to the Fleetguard StrataPore. If they are priced the same I'd pick the RP filter.

I've used Mobil 1 filters from the day they came out in the early 90s, but I won't pay $13.00 for one. I do use them when I get a special from AA or AAP, but if I have to buy a filter outright I go with Bosch.

You didn't mention the oil your using... Syn, Blend or Conventional????

Mobil 1 or RP....if your going for longer OCI's...10K to 15K. Any OCI's less than 8,000...is overkill and a waste of money.

Purolator PureOne or Bosch Preminum (half the price of the M1 / RP)... if your OCI's are in the 6K yo 8K area.

The anti drain back valves from the ones I cut open were identical aside from color.

I think either would suit you fine.

I think Royal Purple and M1 are both made by Champ. The outside may be identical to an ST. Inside is what counts. You could measure how much media if you cut them open, but that would tell you little about the quality of it. Maybe you could beat out the efficiency and dirt holding specs from the manufactures. You could also browse the used oil analysis forum, but finding apples to apples could take a lot of work.

PepBoys have a deal where you can get 5 individual quarts of Mobil 1 with the Mobil 1 filter for $29.99. Looks like a good deal to me, especially since that's the oil I'm planning on using (0W-30).

A week ago I changed the oil for a friend(15,500 miles on Mobil 1 5w30 Extended Protection with a Mobil 1 filter) and cut open the Mobil 1 filter. There was no grit and the filter looked great, so these filters will last for the long haul.

These are the two biggest differences I can tell...

Mobil 1: Synthetic/cellulose blend media
RP: 100% Synthetic media

Mobil 1: Standard metal endcap glued media
RP: Metal endcap glued plus metal screen reinforced media

Mobil 1 seems to be more on par with a K&N.

The post above pretty much nailed it. The M1 is a little closer to the K&N than the RP although still a very good filter. Here is an RP cut away to compare to the M1 and K&N above...

It looks like the discontinued Delco Ultraguard.

They were made by Champion, the folks who make the Mobil 1 and K&N filters, but used a mesh-backed synthetic media.

I have one left out of a case I bought some years ago.

Looks like a well made filter, a step up from the Mobil 1 filter. Although the Mobil 1 filter looks like a very well made filter too. I'd have no problem at all using the Mobil 1 filter, no problems at all.

Yes it does, also the Toyota TRD except it has a nut on dome like the K&N.

As for the M1 vs K&N, in addition to the previous pics, according to river_rats bench tests, they are virtually the same, and performed almost identically in his tests. http://filtrationcomparisons.weebly.com/conclusions.html

That said, if I were making a choice between the RP and the M1(which I wouldn't be), I would choose the RP over the M1 for the quoted $2.00 difference. IMO, the M1 with the exception perhaps of can thickness, is no better than a P1 which can be had for a little more than one third the price of the M1. But thats just me.

fwiw, much of this in addition to his separate link summary above, is discussed in river_rats bench test thread.

Thanks to everyone for their informative input, especially with the photos!

In the end, I purchased the Mobil 1 filter because it was bundled with 5 quarts of Mobil 1 oil at PepBoys for $29.99. They had the same promotion with RP but at $49.99. Since I needed to get some oil with the filter, the difference ended up being $20, not $2! Unfortunately I'm currently unemployed, so to me, $20 is a big enough difference.

But I haven't ruled out RP for the future...

+1 ... the Royal Purple, ACDelco Ultraguard and Toyota TRD are basically the same design/construction, and a level above the K&N and Mobil 1 filters IMO.
