How well would these oils hold up as an extended drain lubricant in a 2000 chrysler sebering with the notoriously sludgy 2.7 v6?

Neither.

KNOWN sludger = NO extended oil changes with ANY oil in my book.

My daughter had a 1999 Lexus RX300 v6 and that was a sludger. We didn't know it at the time that it was a sludger but I was doing 10,000 mile OCIs with regular Mobil 1 10w30 and as far as we knew the engine didn't have sludge problems. She sold it with 85,000 miles to a friend of hers in 2004 and she has continued to use Mobil 1 10w30. To this day the Lexus still is going great.

I may be wrong, but I'm not sure royal Purple was ever intended to do the same Job oils like Mobil 1 Extended Performance or Amsoil do.

If it were me, I'd run the regular mobil 1 which has excellent cleaning agents, but keep the oil change to 5-6K miles.

I dont think you'd safely get your money out of the Mobil 1 Extended Performance.

How extended?

If it's a little longer than the factory OCI, then Mobil 1 Extended Performance.

If it's a lot longer, then I agree with Bill in Utah.

Royal Purple is rated API SL, and has a Tbn of 11-12. It can be used for extended drains.

I would use Mobil 1.

+1. Just get regular m1 and leave it at that. If you want to combat sludge further, go redline, but still no extended oci.

Ok it sounds unanimous mobil 1. Reagular that is. Is going to be the oil and the oci will be 6k. This is my pastor's car and right now I am doing a timing belt on it. Wish me luck. I will pass the news on to him. Thanx guys

What Bill said........

Feel free to slowly extend the OCI, but only if you pull a valve cover after each change and have a look inside. If it was my car, I'd peek right now, just to know the engine's "sludge status."

I would do what Geonerd suggested in checking to see if there is any sludge now. Then go with Mobil 1.

Do you know what oil and the OCI you pastor was using. Your doing a nobel thing, but be careful, if you know what I mean.

RP is an extended drain capable oil. 12-15K.

No, not unanimous. I will 2nd the other guy who said RP although either oil will work. In a known sludger I would not exceed 5000-7500. I would consider doing a Seafoam crankcase treatment or something like AutoRX then start using whichever oil you pick. Adding some Seafoam to the crankcase about 100 miles before every oil change will help to keep the engine clean.

I'd go with the RP as well, given the choices asked for. I'd also use MMO vs Seafoam in a known sludger. Add a pint a 1000 miles before dumping the oil and call it good. I wouldn't even think about extended drains in a known sludger. IIRC I think even Amsoil the king of extended drains has a few engines they don't advise doing extended drains on. Happy Holidays!

MMO is another good option. I just prefer Seafoam. Works faster.

I never tried Seafoam in the crankcase, so in all honesty I shouldn't knock it. It's just that MMO is like a family tradition, and my father has so many success stories with it that I tend to favor it. Its worked some magic for me too. Bottom line is keeping a known sludger clean, and that is what this thread is all about!
